I would really appreciate any bit of feedback I can get on this. I would like to suggest that the definition of a short domain name is:

5 characters or less

This would include numbers, letter and hyphens and any other wierd characters that can be in a domain name.

I've been tossing this up. I definately think that 4 characters is short. I'm not sure about 6 characters. (Is Google.com a short domain?) I'm definately against 7. I don't want to have a survey on this thread as I consider that it could be biased by the fact that I'm arguing for 5 characters.

I'm also not sure about whether the length of the extention plays a part as to whether the domain would be considered short. Do all these domain have just as much reason to be consider short?

My gut feeling is that the extension doesn't play a part but I don't know what other people think.

I intend to promote myself as being somebody who specialises in short domains and so it is very important to me to know what I'm promoting. I believe that it is very important to have a clear definition of what a short domain is. I believe that there is going to be a lot of growth in Short Domains in the future. My basis of this is the $5000+ sales that I have had in the past year and what I've seen and learned since then.

Please can you give me some constructive feedback on my definition of what a short domain is. (5 characters or less)

I am most interersted in people's opinions who disagree with the definition and why.

How about: A short domain sector is one where the vast majority of premium domains have been registered. You have a fudge factor in the word "Premium".

There are a number of country codes where two letter domains are still available. I imagine there are lots of nice 4 and 5 letter .us and .biz.

In .com I hear there are few if any really nice LLLLL, I have only one, stumbled on it a year ago.

So yea, LLLLL.com might be the place to put the line, Mixed L&N, and other extensions you may want to push it in a bit.

There are two reasons, at least, for the value of short domains:
They are easy to type without errors. This goes to the entire name including extension. I have a few two letter Country Code domains. That is two letters, a dot, and the two letter country code. 5 characters total including the dot. A few countries offer one letter domains. Now that is short. One just sold on Ebay for about $600, if I remember correctly. Some two letter CC names can be had for reg fee. They are not worth much now. I cannot see how that can continue, but what do I know.

The supply of short domains is clearly limited. There are 676 LL domains of each extension, if they are released. 17576 LLL's, 456,976 LLLL's 11,881,376 LLLLL's and 308,915,776 with 6 letters. It goes up fast! Only a few internationaly unrestricted domains allow one letter registration, and not very many allow 2 letters. There are something like 250 extensions but by far most of them are restricted, often to only legit businesses within the country.
