What happens to the "free" domain name if you transfer?

My main domain name was registered for "free" by my webhost and according to them, it will be free as long as I have an account with them. I paid 2 years in advance, but if I transfer the domain name before the 2 years is over, will the domain name still be mine until the 2 years is over, or will the webhost be obliged to cancel my account with them if they are not hosting any of my sites?

This is something you will need to consult your web host about. Different hosts have different contingencies regarding domain transfers. Most say that the domain is free as long as you have an account open with them.

Just to be safe, I would contact your host and find out all the details. ;)

Thanks for your reply. I fear they might react negatively to this...but yes, you're right. :-/

Yes, that will entirely depends on your hosts' policies. They may make you pay a fee if you want to get it transfered before 2 years.
I would say, it is always safe to register the domains by yourself or yo will have to depend on your host when you need to move away from them.
