Hi. A LLLL.com domain was showing as available. in Godaddy I logged into my Godaddy account and tried to buy it via Paypal.

However, the domain did not show in my account. I decided to check the whois on the domain and was surprised to see that it is showing as created on 5 May but updated today, 6 June by someone else.

Do you think something funny is going on or is it possible that someone did register 8004.com earlier on and it was still showing as available on a Godaddy search today?

Also, why did it show as updated and not available immediately after I attempted to register it?

Your advice on this is much appreciated, thanks.

Its usual and nothing new in it. Godaddy search has bugs sometimes.

Hi yogiDomain, thanks for your reply. I thought that was the case. What I am trying to understand is what the difference between the creation date and updated date is? It seems like it the update was only triggered when I tried to register it.

I see. Do you think that it may have been drop catched?

no you can dropcatch NNNN .com unless you have ultrafast script that will register that for you.
NNNN .com's are generally caught by big players like Namejet, SnapNames or Pheenix and later auctioneed for higher price.
Currently NNNN .com gets $XXXX price.

I sometimes experience the opposite. A domainname sometimes seems available (it concerns just dropped domains) at other reigstrars, while godaddy says it's occupied, and says it's even for sale on godaddy's auctionsite. So some domains that still show up for sale aren't actually for sale anymore, but free to register (at other registrar).

I guess the thing to do is check the Whois to verify if it is still registered or pedning deletion?

could be a search bug, try to find the whois on different authentice sites like who.is etc.

Thanks webmann - I think the morale of the story here is that it is incedibly hard for newbies to register any NNNN or LLLL .coms...(if at all possible)

GoDaddy's search is not in real time. You should always use the registry's whois. But if it shows as available and it's a .com/.net, you should register it immediately because verisign sell their search results.
