What Forum Software do you use?

I am just asking everyone right now, because I am thinking of what I should get... I am thinking about VB but I don't know if I wanna pay $100/year for a license...

I dont know why but alot of people have negative views about phpBB. phpBB is secure, I have worked with it for some time and have found nothing that would make a negative impression. Whenever there is a security problem with phpBB, it is fixed very quickly by the developers. You just have to bother visiting the phpBB site to catch up with the updates. phpBB is very customizable and it definately has more hacks than any other forum software mainly because it is opensource and devs dont have to worry about *legal issues*, *copyright*, *licensing* and other procedures.

I must say one thing here... Unexperienced board hackers (a.k.a. script kiddies) usually flood the board with scripts that do not interfere with the base of the board nor damage the database (fill it up ofcourse) and these things are made popular by unexperienced admins as "security problem" or "attacks".

A real security problem would be if the script somehow allows a potential hacker to execute commands on the server OR if the script allows unauthorized access to the board's database, or makes it possible to inject the SQL with a huge number of queries resulting in slowing down of the server or a crash.

Misuse should not be interpreted as "Security Problem"

I use vbulletin and I have an owned license so I will never be using a free one ever again unless I start another forum.

I am about to install a new forum for my site. I want VB, but I personally can't afford it a.t.m. So the ? is, do I install phpBB or IPB. Both are on my server, but I can't decide what to install. I have more knowledge with phpBB, but I want to know what is the easiest forum for moving my database and information to VB if I ever get to purchase a liscense. And also is this even possible?

I used to use phpbb for a few forums a while back, but after 2 serious hack attacks that took me days to fix, i doubt i will ever be using it again... 160$ is a small price to pay to save this sort of hastle IMO...

Currently im using vb on 2 forums ipb on 1 and phpbb and 1.

I prefer vb to them all due to its extensive control you have over the forum. Plus i just love the mods it has.

It's actually possible to do the conversion with both. It's basically the same process. You use ImpEx which is included with VBulletin once you buy it.

I tried to set one of these up, but it seemed to be missing some files, so I just said heck with it and used phpBB instead lol. But Ill definitely try again sooner or later.
