I plan to invest in one or more premium domains, rather than lots of hand registered and low quality domains. My budget is $2,500 USD. What types of domains should I be looking at to buy, one word or two words exact match domain of products or services, numeric domains (such as NNNN.com), letter acronyms (such as LLL.com, LL.net, LL.org)?

You should check out dnsaleprice.com or namebio.com to see how much these domains sell for. If you're just starting off then focus on expired and aged domains. Namebio.com and expireddomains.net is a good place to start to find expired domains.
