Got 10K to invest. Curious can I buy solid .com's (generics?) for this sort of money? Any advise on investing 10K in .com domians (possibly .net too).

My advise would be to buy .com/.net with proven established revenue and minimize your risk. If you have time on your hand as well you could spend a part of it on dropcatching/registering domains and try to sell them.
Anyone would probably love to help you spend your $$$.

are you looking to buy just domains or domains with sites?
one thing to check is if someone is selling just a domain with PR and now links, this could be a fake PR

I would look around at somew portfolios for sale, see whats for sale, get some ideas and start building your own, maybe buy a few.
Do alot of research , use your head and always have a buyer in mind.

buying domains and building them into real sites with real traffic is a better way to save $$$. also don't splurge on crap man. really look at the facets and flaws with your 'monocle' like you would with a gemstone. Do it for each one, all too much I hear people say "Man I wasted $100k on crap". Also expiring domains can save you money and gemstones drop all the time. Find the web based drop lists for best results, rather than using the direct drop lists on the top 3 NameJet/SnapNames/Pool/etc.

use the $2000 to buy some low end domain to test the water first. And then buy some higher end one.

Take your time and really do the necessary research, $10k is a lot of money to lose on the wrong domain. I would focus on getting a great name then develop into a solid site that creates steady revenue. I would not spend the whole thing on just the 1 domain.

Thank you all guys for your thoughts. I've skimmed through GreatDomains, Afternic and Flippa - have not seen any gems under 10k.

One of the possibilities I got is a one-word idn.idn domain which translates to "classifieds"/"advertisements" in a recently opened .idn ccTLD.

Consider your interests, hobbies, career, passions, etc and think about a business that you would find interesting to operate. With half your funds, look for a killer domain related to that topic. Then you will still have half your funds for development and marketing. And rather than have hundreds of domains with annual renewals which you need sales to cover, you just have one renewal, a great domain and money for development.

If I were you, I would buy an exact match .com / .net / .org (yes) with product type of domain (or something that really interests you) with decent search volume (minimum 5-10k exact per month) for $500. I would spend then $1.5k on webdesign + $6k on programming and $2k on content + backlinks. You will get much further than with a single content free domain.

yep was thinking about the same. i'm a web developer myself so this should make things easier. just don't want to spend months developing something nobody will use.. this has happened in the past.

It's not so hard. Search the forums, Tdnam, Namejet, Snap, Pool. You will find something. If not, try a hyphenated domain - there is absolutely no downside SEO wise.

With 10K you can buy a good LLL.com or a revenue making domain. It all depends on your objectives. Are you looking to hold long terms for the right end user offer ? I don't think it's wise to gamble on unproven stuff like IDN .in, invest in what is already established instead. With 10K you don't have to settle for bad names. Buy one or two but not 100 or 1000.

The best bargains are usually to be found in the drops but that does'nt mean its a doddle to resell them for a profit.

A while back I checked up on hundreds of domains that I had seen bought in the drops over the last 5 years, probably well over 80% of them were still parked and most were showing for sale signs.

These names covered the full range of prices from $39 all the way up to $500,000 and totalled in the millions of dollars,

Sedo has about 13 million domains for sale right now.

My deduction: Its far easier to buy than to sell, patience and LUCK is needed.

Good Luck

.

tetrapak, sdsinc, gazzip, 1john2004 - Thanks very valuable advice from all of you. Is there a service where I can find/sort droplists along with # of monthly searches for the term? So that one can quickly sort the list by this column and thus see the most searched ones.

I agree with that. 5 to 10 domains seems to be the correct approach to reduce the risk.
I can't help you with number of searches but if you you want to check all CVCV.com on auction on multiple sites you can go to NameCatch and press the CVCV button.
CVCV's a long time investment. You need to hold on to these domains for a while and wait for clients. However they are a safe bet. At any time you can auction off any CVCV.com you will most likely get back the money you originally paid.
