What are the various reasons someone checks Whois?

I have been looking at Whois checks on my names at Godaddy and see that some have more than 20 whois checks this month but I have not received any offers on those names. I would assume that the only reason to check the Whois is to enquire about a name but is there another reason someone checks Whois?

I understand that scamming and spamming is one of the reasons but I would like to hear the other reasons that I am not aware of.

or expired.
or who the webhost is (sometimes)
