I am in the negotiation with some hosting providers but the packages I am choosing they are unmanaged VPS

I want to know what are the risks with unmanaged VPS?

For example if I run this forum on an unmanaged VPS then it will be very easy to hack? or some other things are involved.

Please guide me about this.

Any server, including a VPS needs to be secured and kept up to date, or it will be vulnerable to attacks. So, if you're not a server admin yourself, or can secure the services of one, you need to go for a fully managed service.

there are no risks if you do everything correctly and if you are trying install everything. Just make sure you have every application updated and you sure what you are doing
But managed VPS is not much expensive so better pay few extra dollars and be happy and patient

The main risk is: you will pay for the VPS month to month and will have no idea how to proceed and go ahead
I believe that is the main risk you might have

If you take normal precautions like using firewalls, updatinng the scripts / softwares etc. there is no great deal of risk. There is an element of risk in managed servers as well, so dont worry too much about it. Always take backups and keep it on another machine.

Once you have your server secured and setup correctly, your server shouldnt have much problems. I would go with the Unmanaged VPS, pay someone to setup everything. Then hire them to do a weekly / monthly checkup. That can save you some money, otherwise go with the managed service, it shouldnt cost too much.

If you get unmanaged Virtual Private Server you should deal with the system administration - OS installation and maintenance, anti-spam, antivirus, security, software installation and etc. I suggestyou to speak to the VPS hosts you found about using managed VPS. You'll pay a little bit more, but you'll be able to focus on business.

As for me I like to use unmanaged VPS deals from a reliable companies like vpsland, hostingsource and knownhost. They offer management at additional prices.
In case of necessity you contact them for help.
