Website with videos host advice seeking

Hello All,

I am thinking of developing a site where users can upload one of more videos of between 30secs to 2 minutes or so each.

Each user should also be able to view each other's video when requested.

Please, for I am new to this, what would you recommend in terms of bandwidth required, hosting company, price and space, provided that videos are encoded in Flash?
Also, I am based in the UK. If a good hosting company is say in US, am I ok to go with them or should I go for a local one?

initially up to 1000 users accessing the site say per month
concurrent access to a single video say by 10 users

What Bandwidth do I need?
At what price should I go for?
What space required to host this number of clips?

Any advice really appreciated!!

Well, bandwidth would be determined by the size of the file. What kind of space you'll need is also dependent on that. Personally, I would go for a really small shared account, and then upgrade as needed. You won't have any traffic at first and there's no use in paying for something that you don't need. I would submit tickets at all of the hosting companies, and check on the video encoding. Some hosts encode on the fly, and some hosts have tweaks for flash videos. Hope this helps

You'll need lots of traffic and CPU to host videos, if you decide to go with a shared plan, make sure you'll have a lot of traffic. If you plan to expand, however, VPS seems to be a more reasonable solution.


The fact that you are in the UK and your host will be in the USA (the eastern coast preferably) won't influence the performance of the site, if you have international visitors.
