Looking for Host / Hosting Style Recommendations

I am in the process of developing my new site (localbands dot tv). It is going to contain mp3s and music videos of bands. I want to make it a very media intense site. Any ideas on a good hosting plan or what type of hosting (ie. VPS, Shared Hosting, Dedicated) I should look into? I am still debating which video format to use as well (WMV, FLV, etc).

It does sound like you need a dedicated server. I would recommend going with WWW.RackSpace.com as the biggie or Ez1Web.com. You should get solid performace and the dedicated servers are a great way to go for flexibility.

I think you could safely start out with a VPS and work your way on to a dedicated to save money in the initial phase. Do you have any ideas as to what kind of traffic and how many clips will be on your website yet?

I signed up for a VPS today for starters. I will make the move if revenue permits / is needed. They were running a deal and I had to pick it up. I got one with these specs:

10 GB Space
200 GB Transfer
256 MB RAM Guar. / 1 GB Burst
2 IPs

No idea about numbers of clips / traffic yet. Into development mode now.. Thanks for the input

I would rather suggest u better buy a reseller plan and host ur site on them . this way u can get more options for ur site

I would suggest you start with a shared hosting package. Jumping to a VPS right off isn't something I'd suggest as it is an uneeded extra expense. Kinda like family...you don't have a kid and then jump to a full size van. You gradually build yourself up to that level.

Besides you'll have lower expenses...

Shared = $5, $10, $15, $20, $25, $30, $35, $40
VPS = $20, $40, $60, $80, $100, $120, $140

So why bother jumping right into a VPS when a shared will do and that extra money could be used in marketing your website.

This is something we always suggest to clients as it'll help them grow, as opposed to suggesting they go with the most expensive package so we can see more profit and then end up watching them fail. We like to see clients grow but not waste a LOT of cash doing so when its not needed, sure we may profit more but afterall its not about us. Its about the customer.
