I would suggest you start with a shared hosting package. Jumping to a VPS right off isn't something I'd suggest as it is an uneeded extra expense. Kinda like family...you don't have a kid and then jump to a full size van. You gradually build yourself up to that level.
Besides you'll have lower expenses...
Shared = $5, $10, $15, $20, $25, $30, $35, $40
VPS = $20, $40, $60, $80, $100, $120, $140
So why bother jumping right into a VPS when a shared will do and that extra money could be used in marketing your website.
This is something we always suggest to clients as it'll help them grow, as opposed to suggesting they go with the most expensive package so we can see more profit and then end up watching them fail. We like to see clients grow but not waste a LOT of cash doing so when its not needed, sure we may profit more but afterall its not about us. Its about the customer.
