Maybe not precisely the correct forum for these questions, but this is a smart group of people, so here goes :

1) I am seeking to start a website/blog. Not something on blogger or blogspot, but rather an independent URL of www.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.com. Are the only things I need a hosting service (like Yahoo hosting) and a blogging software like Moveable Type?

2) Does blogging software like Moveable Type allow you to have Google Ads on your website?

3) Can I get by with the free version of MoveableType (or similar package), or do I have to buy the $70 version?

Thanks for your help.

Do you know of Moveable Type specifically allows Google Ads?

Also, is there any disadvantage of using a free host like zeeblo? How can Yahoo charge $11/month? Is it more hacker-resistant?

i dont think there is any disadvantage of using free hosts ... infact some free hosts are better than paid hosts ... i dont like yahoo hosting service ... i 'll just go with other paid companies :)

Most free hosts have ads to go with them(explains why they are free), you don't get a whole lot of space, and you have to have a name like www.geocities.com/yournameblahblah.htm
These are not bad at all if they meet your needs. A blog can't take up too much info(not sure because I have never had one). Plus these are free ways to get your feet wet in the web design world.

Anything else of note? Anyone have direct experience using Movable Type?

I would recomend WordPress over movable type, MT seems to have more comment spam than other software I have noticed.

Yup, got to agree, use Wordpress or a similar type of blogging software, and Movable doesn't have a in built Ad-sense code block...you will have to implement the code yourself into the template.

In my opinion, you shouldn't use Yahoo for hosting, for a number of reason, you may not be able to get PHP or MySql on some packages, these are the main requirments to run a dynamic blog.

Try going with a host such as, www.hostgator.co.uk, my brother uses them, they seem to be reliable, and you also get Cpanel, and Fantastico, which will make it easier to install your blog. :)

Hope i helped with your decision.

Thanks.

By Ad-sense code block, do you mean the place where you insert the AQd-sense code to get Google ads to show up on your blog?

Thanks
