Was it good or bad advice to dump my portfolio for peanuts?

I posted on here for the first time yesterday. I am new to domaining, I really just started buying names this year, and I went domain crazy the last 3 months. Per a friends advice I bought names that were keyword friendly and tried to stick with .coms and .nets.

I tried parking and didn't make as much as I thought I would.

I came on here yesterday and asked for an estimate of what I should sell the names for and how and where I should sell them. The appraisal board was brutal, I felt like i had wasted my money even though I thought I had some great names......the Newbie page was a little friendlier they just told me that I bought too many too fast.

I decided today to just put 288 names on ebay as a bulk lot 3 day auction to try to get some of my investment back.....but now I am having second thoughts thinking that I may be settling for too little because of some feedback I received on the appraisal board. Is that a mistake? Did I act too soon? Ugh....you guys make this look easy. Any advice would be appreciated !!!

I don't think you are going to get a good result here whatever you do, doubt you'll be getting your money back, but it will be a good learning experience. Focus on acquiring names one by one, preferably something of definite value and that probably means buying something for a couple of hundred at auction. Each name should involve a tonne of research.

Would be forgetting about anything with the "3d", "solar" or "green" in it, these are fad areas where the main market is people like yourself registering names hoping it will be the next big thing. It is the domain industry's version of get rich quick.

I will say this though, this person has some balls to see it so quickly and put them up for sale, typically people keep renewing stuff for a year or two before realising that those "lowball" appraisals might have been on the money.

I know that the trademark issues exists with several of the names, and I will admit to jumping on the fad wagon buying the green and solar and electric car domains.....what should I look for though? Do you think that I could get $1500 back on this list? Ugh.....this stinks. Then I went and bought another one today because it sounds good, NewYorkCab.net, any chance I could sell that one to an end user?

What's the link to your eBay auction? I looked and couldn't find it. Might as well put the link up. Who knows, maybe it will help drive the final price up a little... BTW, don't be too hard on yourself about all this. I've done the same thing (still holding a lot of junk even now), and from what I have read, many others have started out the same way, too.

I honestly believe most if not all get started like this
If the domains are quite far from expiration, you can always try and pitch in to end-users. Try to filter and go for it... I mean you already have them so why not try, right? There's always a chance you'd be able to make a sale and maybe even cover half the expenses with just 1 domain from the list.

You need to do a lot of research, watch the auctions, see what gets multiple bids. I think you'll find it is popular keyword names (especially with commercial appeal) and truly rare and in demand names.

STOP BUYING. Seriously, put your credit card away. I see a couple of nice ones in there, but there's a lot of obvious trademark violations.

If you're serious about domaining, then READ, READ, READ on this forum and elsewhere. Namepros is a great resource.
