I saw War of the Worlds last night and while I was taken in and enjoyed the movie as a whole. The were some unsettling problems....well, one in particular. No, it wasn't Tom Cruise. He is actually a very good actor, IMO. He did very well in this role and Dakota Fanning was outstanding too. In addition, the special effect, the build up of the action and the unfolding of the story was all pretty well done. I went away feeling quite entertained...but insulted. I felt like I was given a half-baked premise and it was assumed I was going to believe it. What I'm talking about is the "fact" that these aliens stored the tripods here on earth. The opening of the movie, the narrator told us that the "aliens" watched us and studied, planning thier attack. If they stored the tripods here before people were here the attack was already planned. Mr. Spielberg, you should have stayed with the meteor idea from the original story.
If the aliens wanted the planet why did they wait until now to invade? Oh yeah, so they had more crap to blow up.
One more thing: The ending was just too quaint. Seemed like the whole family was about make up and sit down to Sunday brunch at the unscathed brownstone. Glad to see everyone made it ok. I'm sure the Spot did too.
