Welcome to what we've created. It's only going to get worse. Traditional holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas primarily, have been turned into commercial slaughterfests, completely ignoring the true purpose of these days.
If our society were worth 2 shits, we'd wouldn't adhere the public call for buying frenzies. The pipers (Walmart, Target, etc.) play their melodies and we come running - like well trained sheep. This behavior is shameful to the human levels of intellect, and when it starts costing peoples lives - "in the line of duty" - i think the threshold of rude awakening has long been crossed.
The current state of economy definitely plays a role in people looking for "the best deal". At the same time though, if people were to start comparative shopping, they'd quickly realize that the "Black Friday" deals are actually not all that much of a deal at all.

That's about as insane as the "running of the bulls"!

That is sad and horrific! This is the first year in a few that I didn't get up and go out early in the morning. With all the great deals that are to be had online it simply didn't seem worth it. I haven't ever been one in the front of the line, more like hanging out in the back until everyone is pushing. Still is is madness and not something I look forward too.

It was nice to sleep in today (6:30 is still sleeping in right? :o) and no I didn't go out shopping at that insane hour either. I am not shopping today if I can help it. Grocery store shouldn't count as shopping ;)

That actually made our major newspapers way up here in Manitoba, Canada!

Really sad how the economy is impacting people's livelihoods.

I do almost all my shopping other than groceries online..

Very sad how commercial society has become but it's the economy too. I read recently where a farmer opened his fields to people wanting the leftovers after harvest and FORTY THOUSAND people showed up to glean the fields!

This is extremely sad and it such a shame that someone had to die over people just wanting to bag a bargain.

The crowd kept running into the store even after the police arrived, jostling and pushing officers who were trying to perform CPR, the police said.

It's sick!!!

I don't know who is worse, the people or the stores.

Let's rationalize for a sec;

I've been talking to some folks at my office today. They had relatives waiting in line to the cash registers - some of them for more than 2 hours. AFTER they found the desired items.
If you start adding the costs of your presence; Getting up early, being there early, waiting to get into the store, racing after your desired items, waiting in line at check out - the savings are almost broke even by your missed hourly wage or broken down salary.
I sincerely hope that no one is attending the race for items purely for the social experience, because at the end of the day, that might be all that's left. :cy:

Theres only one thing worse than a charging herd of marauding animals,

A charging herd of marauding people!

Very sad indeed.

Then factor in the small chance you end up being the one who gets trampled on.... Err, no thanks. Are the prices really any cheaper than you could get online from discount e-tailers?

You know, the sad thing is that this happens every year. I think that there is just more of an emphasis on it this year as a result of the poor economy. People may not die every year, but there are injuries every year.

It's a favorite amongst TV networks. I've been seeing it here on our local TV news for the past 8 -10 years or so. Sort of an American version of Pamplona!

"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling, 'I've been on line since yesterday morning,"' she said. "They kept shopping."

Honestly, there are days I wish a plague upon the human race..

Thought I'd add this here:

I think using the death of an employee at Walmart as a leadin to a sale is, at best, heinous.. please remove me from your list.

Hey David,

Did you get all your shopping done?

I hope your day was safe and harmless...
did you read that someone was actually
trampled to death at a Wal Mart?

At WAL MART? That's scary stuff, I can't
think of a single thing at Wal Mart I'd need
to literally walk over another person to get.

And, we're talking a discount retailer here. I might
be able to see it if they were giving away free
Aston Martin's or something...speaking of
giving away, that actually brings something to
mind.

The other day I heard about something called
The Wordpress Project. An interesting program
put together by Keith Baxter.

There are not one, not two, but FOUR really great
videos that he's put together for you that explain in
pretty raw detail how he's been creating sites and then,
like Wal Mart on Black Friday....sending a stampede
of traffic to them.

Go take a look, it's worth it. But if you decide to
implement it....when you pull the trigger...

For gosh sake, stay outta the way of the
crowd <G>
