I have tried to study chinese lately, because I would like to invest to premium IDN .cn domains. At the moment I am not sure if I should invest to 犬.cn domain. I realized that 狗 also means dog and as far as I have uderstood it is used more in spoken language, when people speak about dogs. Could someone clarify me and say what is the difference between 狗 and 犬? I would also know that does 犬.cn have any mind as a domain name, because I have often saw that 犬 character is used at the end other words. Does it work alone?

I'm not Chinese, only a crappy Chinese linguist. I'm sure that 狗 means dog, I have not seen 犬 used for dog, but there is a bar run by Chinese people around the corner from where I live so I will ask them for you and get back to you.

So, I just got back from the bar and according to the Chinese lady, 狗 would be the better choice. According to her 犬 can be used for a dog but also other animals as well. I don't know if that helps you much, but that is the best I can do.

犬 means dog in Japanese, so not a lot of good on a .cn website.
I know much less about Chinese, but have seen the other character used at a few restaurants that serve dog meat. You might want to clarify the common usage, and see if that character is commonly used for pet dogs.

狗 and 犬 both mean DOG in Chinese -

People says in daily:
一隻狗 - a dog
我的狗 - my dog
那隻狗 - that dog
可愛的狗 - lovely dog
but Not:
一隻犬
我的犬
那隻犬
可愛的犬

Mostly people says '犬' is for different 'type' of dogs:
黃金獵犬 - Golden Retriever
拳師犬 - Boxer
德國牧羊犬 - German Shepherd Dog
臘腸犬 - Dachshund
(sometimes may use '狗' as well)

Thank you a lot for the answers!

I am still wondering, if I should invest to 犬.cn. I would apreciate if you can still help me.

From chinese people point of view what kind of site you expect to find behind following domains?

狗.cn
犬.cn

Does 犬.cn fit well for example for dog related video and photo sharing site?

Try wiki - http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Mainland Chinese use 狗 in daily Chinese
犬 is ancient and written usage for 狗,and cannot be used independently, usually with other characters and words and in official documents and legal files.

Just my understanding and scholarship.

One great thing is both words have same writing in simplified and traditional Chinese.

狗.cn fits anything relating to dog
犬.cn is a more academic and less commonly used, but still would work well to me for any dog related sites from a development point of view.

If you look at SEO, 犬 has 1.6 million google search, and 狗 has 6.1 million. So that should give an estimate on their relative value.

From PPC point of view, you'd see a quite a bit more ads for 狗 on baidu and google, and much less for 犬

Personally, I will suggest you to acquire 狗.cn.
In Chinese, 狗 is a common speaking word, and 犬 is a more formal term. You would say some thing like I will like to have a "狗" or I like my "狗", instead of using "犬". Hope this help.
