I've already read the "Have you had an Epik experience?" thread.

there was no mention of video stores in that thread , i only came across this info when i posted here , the whole pointo the thread is that someone believes .tv is worth developing into some form of store , it's the first example of this i have come across

Some of us want more than parking for our .tvs

At $200 - $499 a pop, anyone will believe in . tv.

Epics model is to take your money and make you a glorified parking site for half the rev and a big chunk of change up front. Thats not believing in .tv - that's capitalism in its most basic form.

Since the rev is next to nothing, you haven't really last anything other than your upfront investment in a "portal"

What do you mean for video store?
I didnt read anything related for "video store" in epik's blog post.
They were talking about product sites, directory sites and video portals.

What they are doing you could do it with wordpress, joomla or drupal and get all the revenue.
I d only prefer them if their websites converted better or if they have exceptional seo skills.
I never tried them since I make my own websites so I cant express any opinion regarding their services.

The key is traffic and convertion, if you have those skills then its easier to make a developed website successful.

I think Rob Monster and his team are doing a fine job, especially what he is offering for the price it is more than fair, imo. I have two sites coming soon via epik and I am very much looking forward it. It is a step in the right direction for next to nothing in cost, imo.

Video Portals @ Epik

Good discussion here. In response to the question on Epik's video portals, I thought I would add some updated perspective.

Video Portals are a pretty interesting development area for .TV domains. Here is the original post about what is being developed at Epik:

Video Portals – a sneak peak at what is coming next from Epik « Epik Blog

We also covered Video Portals at DevCon on Thursday morning. John Lawler's Powerpoint presentation on the Development Toolbox will be posted on Slideshow.com later this weekend. FYI, Slideshow.com is another Epik Development. The same team that built Slideshow.com is also building Video Portals.

The big unresolved question for video has been how to monetize it. People pay for Cable TV and Satellite TV but not for web video. That does not entirely make sense to me since the guys who produce the content have to make a living too.

So, our plan for Video Portals is that these sites, like Paranormal.TV or Racing.TV will combine both free content and premium content, meaning that the publishers/contributors of video can upload a video object and earn money when someone upgrades to premium membership when watching their video.

The evidence is pretty clear that Micropayments don't really work for content, and we are not suggesting to run online peep shows. However, the SuperPass model DID work in the past.

So, if someone wants to watch one particular video on say Paranormal.TV, they will buy a membership on the Epik Video Network which now lets them watch all videos, ad free, across the network, including both say Racing.TV and Paranormal.TV.

The publisher who uploaded the video that caused the new member to join now gets a rev-share of that new membership revenue.

It is still early days for Video Portals, but I am pretty sure of three things:

1. There is an opportunity to combine content, community and commerce around segmented online video channels using the .TV TLD.

2. There is a model for charging people for ad-free, high quality video content.

3. Similar to the Product Portal model, there are synergies from having related video channels cross-linked to each other.

We started developing Video Portals in early 2010 mainly because we did not think anyone had adequately addressed the opportunity.

As for charging setup fees, if anyone thinks they can build a high quality video portal for less than we charge, they are certainly welcome to share examples. As we get efficiencies, we will be passing along those savings to Epik Developers.

At the same time, the number of Video Portals that could ever be reasonably justified is not more than perhaps 10,000. Just as there will probably never be more than 100,000 product portals. The goal is not to sell as many as possible. The goal is to develop as many as makes sense for the consumer.

We look forward to shipping the first video portals later this month and will welcome feedback on this new platform. Too early to say whether it is going to be a slam dunk like product portals, but I am reasonably optimistic here which is why we accepted a few initial orders from intrepid early adopters.

If I thought this was a dog project, I would kill the project. I actually think this project has legs and could be a game-changer for .TV owners who are sitting on a lot of expensive undeveloped land.

Sorry for the long post.

Sorry for the long post.

Long posts are appreciated when there's some interesting discussion points. I probably will digest it for a while. I'm rather opinionated and cynical.. (however, more intrigued in this case) so I'll give the optimists a chance first! For now I'll settle for making some seemingly rambling nebulous statements. I'll take them further if anyone expresses a real interest.

I may have sold Epik short in the short term. What I'm fighting with is that I know where the Internet is going but I've been struggling with identifying all the steps that it will take to get us there.

I've dropped a lot of comments here and there and what annoys me (personally) is that the Epik model seems to be *going* in that direction but is not completely the model that I've predicted. It's a halfway house...similar...but not in the same holistic manner.. however; I'm wondering if Epik will be the one of the first step towards a new overall model - and I find that interesting.

The real question for me is trying to determine the steps where the foundational cracks appear in the current underlying domain model of the internet. The main steps I've identified have ALL already started except one. What I understand of Epik - this is the start of the domain name usage change that I've been looking to happen.

I don't think you have the answers (nor do I believe you are looking for them) but I think there's a compelling case to stay you are at the forefront of a paradigm shift... and will play a part.

As Bob Dylan says ' the times, they are a changin''

Appreciate the comment. I'm watching with interest.

Thanks Rob for sharing on this thread as EPIK has alluded a couple of times about this new development but only with limited details. It will be interesting to know more about this new service, how it works, how well the sites rank and how they monetize. The .TV community is a subgroup within the domaining community as many of the long-time domainers focus exclusively on .COM while there are some domainers who are big believers in .US and others in .INFO.

The Slideshow.com EPIK/devrich presentation by John Lawler is likely the one of most interest to .TVers. EPIK will be releasing a real estate portal which might also be of use for geo domains as well.

Investing in development quite often involves a more significant outlay than the domain acquisition itself. Furthermore, about 90% of search traffic goes to sites on page one meaning that development can be a very expensive proposition if it doesn't generate results. Thus, prior to going the development route, a domain investor is going to want to see clear evidence of how a financial return will be generated. EPIK sites typically involve a modest initial investment in website setup plus a 50% revenue share of future website earnings.

I think all we need is a Video CMS. Here is alink to some most popular video CMS's: http://www.vivalogo.com/vl-resources/best-multimedia-cms-video-sharing.htm (not mine, found it on google). There are many free and good ones. Many free themes and plugin's are built around every CMSs.

I have been using PHPMelody, only $39 for full source code version. It's able to insert videos from Youtube and other video sites and lots more. I think all the CMSs are able to do this. Have been happy with this one.

To give an insight, just started a PHPMelody site on mTube . TV(It's now Parked) by adding ~20 videos from Youtube, It made 30 to 75 cents per click with adsense had > 10% CTR. No problem at all to recover domain renewal price. Per Year: >50c/day * 365 = ~200$!!! and I invested 10$/year in to this domain!

Hyper - it would be interesting to see the layout for some of your sites where you are getting anywhere near a 10% CTR. My average CTR for English sites is more like 1%. For Spanish sites, they tend to be easier to rank & the CTR tends to be higher but the PPC is much lower.
