It's horrible, but everybody is sleeping while Verisign may quietly get "Carte Blanche" on .com pricing if we do not react massively and do it now!
Read here the .COM Amendment.
If the proposed 8-year .COM extension is granted by ICANN, and the Cooperative Agreement expires in 2018 (between VeriSign and NTIA), VeriSign will no longer be subject to price restraints on .COM domains!

I've gone over that amendment and the original agreement like 5 times and only see an extension to the agreement. What am I missing??

Um, icann is not controlling Verisign's .com price, the US Department of Commerce is.

The ICANN Cooperative Agreement has nothing to do with the price restrictions placed by the the US Department of Commerce is. Please point to real evidence, otherwise this is all nonsense.

Here is the list of comments ICANN has received until now, regarding this proposed extension of the .com agreement with verisign. Looks like they only have received 18 emails from people in the domaining community so far. Comments can be submitted to: [email protected]

Also, even if the ICANN agreement was related to the price restrictions, I certainly could not find anything related to that in the proposed amendment. I hate these bait-click "news" articles..

Those comments on pricing are from people that don't read, and form opinions from thin air. You think a couple comments from random people is evidence? Please point to real evidence.

you would think new GTLDs would bring prices down, not max out caps.

Did I quote your post? I was not responding to whatever you are talking about. It's clear that there is nothing in this agreement about .com pricing.

I posted the link because some of the comments provided to ICANN do raise very valid and problematic issues regarding this proposed renewal of the extension of the .com agreement with verisign.

Well, there have been a few other bait-click articles in the domaining.com newsletter in the past and this was the last straw - unsubscribed!

If .com price is going up new GTLD price will never go down.

I tend to agree, they have gotten rather desperate as of late.

I used to check daily, now I really don't miss much by not checking it.

I was confused because I didn't receive an email. Then I found the headline on their site:

Concerned about .COM Pricing? Only 1-day left to Comment on the ICANN / VeriSign Extension
If the contract is approved in its current form without including a pricing provision on .COM domains & with the expiration of the Cooperative Agreement in 2018 (between VeriSign and NTIA), VeriSign will no restrictions on pricing! Voice your opinions now and make sure this does not happen. Last day to comment.

Hi,

This is a very good post of the situation:

https://forum.icann.org/lists/comments-com-amendment-30jun16/msg00028.html

If this extension is granted with no price constraints, and the RMZA goes to Verisign, there is no need for the cooperative agreement anymore. The cooperative agreement holds the pricing.

Here is another post:

http://www.internetgovernance.org/2...cann-verisign-root-zone-management-agreement/

โ€œPost-transition, it is not clear whether the Cooperative Agreement is needed at all.โ€

PS: Sorry for the misleading/bait-click newsletter subject but I really wanted to get subscribers attention due to the importance and urgency of this story ( today is the last day to write to voice your opinion by emailing at [email protected] ).

ICANN shouldn't allow this contract to renew automatically. To prevent price increases competitive bidding for .COM contract.

You got my attention all right and lost me as a subscriber. This isn't the first time I've seen completely unprofessional journalism from your newsletter. What you are now listing above (which, btw, is very speculative at best) is totally different from what the newsletter said - and the subject line was outright dishonest. You are what make domainers look bad.

I received the email today:

BREAKING: Verisign doubles .COM price overnight!

Everybody is sleeping while Verisign may quietly get "Carte Blanche" on .com pricing if we do not react massively and do it today!

What will happen if tomorrow the annual renewal cost of .com is multiplicated by 2, 3, ... why not 10? This is why I urge you to voice your opinion by emailing at [email protected] before August 12th (today night) to stop them.

Regards,

Francois Carrillo

The subject of the email is misleading, but it may be due to a language barrier because it would've been okay if changed slightly to "BREAKING: Verisign could double .COM price overnight!"

Read the post above from the person who sends out that newsletter. It was intentional bait-click to get people to see it. No language barrier, just unprofessional and dishonest "journalism".
