Ok, I think I'm going to make the switch from phpbb to vbulletin. I was thinking of leasing vbulletin for a year, and see how it goes. What makes vbulletin better then phpbb? What extra features does it have?

For one it is a lot more secure :)

There are several major security issues with most versions of phpBB....

Also VBulletin has more, and more stylish mods :tu:

VBulletin is soo much better, if you can afford it! ;)

VB is better, everyone knows that. However is it worth the price? It depends on the size of your forum. In a forum big like this one, definatly it's worth it, in a forum with 200 members, no it's not worth it in my oppnion. The only think I like much more in vB w/mods thats not in phpBB w/mods is the reputation system, and for a small forum it's not worth it.

yes, as qwert said, it really depends on how many members you have / expect to have!

Like Qwert said it all depends on how many users you plan on having on the forum. Remember that you can always convert from phpBB to vBulletin when you decide to buy vBulletin. However I find that when something is free, in phpBB's case being open-source, more people are encouraged to make hacks, mods, or styles (skins) for a certain script since it's being made available to everyone for free.

So basically if you can't decide and if I were you, I would install phpBB and start from there first and see how it all goes. If the forum becomes bigger in terms of users you might want to install vBulletin by converting which isn't such a bad idea.

I love phpBB. Although I have heard more security-related issues with phpBB, the current version's codebase is supposed to be secure; and when an issue is brought to light, a fix is found much faster because its open source. As pointed out, its being open source means that you can find a lot more hacks and mods available for free. Tweaks are encouraged, and being hands-on is a great way to learn php. With VB, there's a tendency to avoid tweaking (at least for me), since I might break the product I paid for.

I like the Shop and Exchange mod in vBulletin much better then the mod in phpBB IMHO :)

Only use vBulletin if you plan to make a forum as popular as Namepros otherwise your moneys just gone to waste =\

I run vB - however recently (over past 3 weeks) there have been several security updates, so you have to update the whole board. Fine for me, but if you plan to hack alot, then it isnt so good at all...
