Recently I was wondering why I see so many big forums like namepros and others using vbulletin instead of the free alternative , phpbb.
Any forum administrators care to shed some light on this? What are the main advantages of using vbulletin ? I`ve never tried it and would really like to know.

Depends on how big your forum gets....

hmm... I dread the day phpBB goes paid. It will happen... definitely, but hopefully not too soon! :hehe:

phpBB will never move to a paid model since it`s open source (released under the GNU license) . Too many people have contributed to its codebase for it to be later controled by a group.
You can however take the phpbb source make some mods and sell it if you like but you must provide the source with your mods in it to your buyers.

Well to be fair, I do prefer vBulletin, but there are no problems with customizing a PHPbb2 board to suit the rest of the design...Take my forums at www.fookin.co.uk you will notice that I done a sufficient job in rebranding the forum to fit in with the website design...

vBulletin is richer in features, however PHPBB2 is a good comparison for me

What Petter says holds true because vbulletin cost $$ and phpbb is free.

That`s not much of an argument :]

There`s plenty of free software thats miles better than their commercial counterparts.

phpbb is good as a free piece of software but if you can afford vB there really is no comparison between the two. I've used both and while PHPBB is great for those small boards, if you know that your forum is going to hit off vb is the way to go. If anybody here has used both for a significant period of time then I'm 100% sure that they'll agree with me.
