Hi,

Wanted to run this scenario by people:

For a development project lets say you've started an online shop selling mainly dvds.

So you've set up your brand - "Daves Dvd's", and regged davesdvds.com

Now in this scenario, davesdvds is going to have very little search credibility (0 exacts atm), but getting DVD.com or DVDs.com is going to be inaccesibly expensive for our Dave.

Would it be worthwhile also getting d-v-d.com or d-v-d-s.com which would bolster SEO crediblity by having potentially some of the 800,000+ Exacts and 30,000 exacts for DVD and DVDs coming through to DavesDVDs.com once a redirect was set up?

How credible an SEO strategy is this, and how likely is this to help? Would it be a redirect, or would you set this up as an article site telling people how good Daves DVD's are then backlinking to davesdvds from there??

If then the search term is very highly rated in terms of exacts, would the domain itself have any intrinsic value, or is the only value from the SEO potential?

Thanks all.

Would it be worthwhile getting d-v-d.com? No.

Unless you bought it and it was already highly ranked. A domain's high exacts give it value, but not when it has multiple hyphen's in it. So if you had Buy-Dvd.com it would have value but if you had Buy-D-V-D.com it would not. Now, this value is only in a domain market, unless the domain has a site on it and is already highly ranked it won't provide you with any traffic except for maybe 1 strange visit every month or so. Also, if you bought D-V-D.com it's such a highly competitive keyword unless you are willing to spend $x,xxx on SEO (or much more) then it'll never break the top 10.

If you are trying to get traffic to "Dave's Dvd's" then I would recommend doing one of 2 options:

1. Use Google Adwords or Facebook ads to drive traffic. Facebook can get expensive though. The best way to drop costs for Google Adwords is to use a banner/image.
2. Purchase a nice expired domain pertaining to the subject's keyword or hand register one but don't pick a highly competitive keyword. Build a site and get it highly ranked and then put a banner on it to drive traffic to your other site.

Option 1 would give you immediate results, however, it would cost you much more.
Option 2 would take awhile to give you results (potentially months). However, it would probably be cheaper than option 1.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

What if the keyword in question has low competition? It's obviously not DVD, I'm using that as an example, it's actually for a 3 char and a 4 char word, related to a very highly profitable industry, and google adwords shows upwards of 20k local exacts for each word pm. So these two domains are:

l-l-l.tld and l-l-l-l.tld

It's going to be for a monetized search site (through subs and making a product out of the site itself; hard to explain without saying too much!)that is dedicated to that industry; we've already got a nice 6char brandable thats directly related, and 2 long tail domains to redirect to this site, just trying to gain that added advantage.

RE: Adwords, we will certainly be using this avenue.

Thanks again :)

Your welcome!

I figured it wasn't DVD.

To answer your other question if it's low competition...maybe. Depends really but since it's for a 3 or 4 character word I would say it would be hard to rank #1-#3 for "say" if you purchased a domain name S-A-Y.com. I'm not saying it can't be done but you'll definitely be going uphill. To accurately judge your competition you need to study the top 10 sites ranked in Google.

Look at their PR, Age, Backlinks and also look at the site themselves and see how well they are developed. If you need more information just PM me.

Thanks,

Philip

I would never buy a domain with even 1 "-".
