.tv Value of .TV's

I know I am going to get jumped for posting anything on this board, but I will stick my neck out again and ask a question.

Is it me, have I not been following .TV's closely enough of late or has the value of the .TV domain name come down considerably? It seems like a bunch of people are scrappin around selling names for $10-100?

Does anyone else see it the way I am seeing it?

If so, why do you suppose that is? I have my own speculation, but I wanted to know what other people thought?

Also, if you see this trend like me, what do you think it would take to reverse it?

Thanks,

Dave

The value of the .tv domain, implies they are all equal. No the value of great .tv have not gone down imo. The value of so-so domains that probably only had a value of reg fee to everyone but the registrant are not selling correct.

But I have seen this in everything. I had 6 offers of over $300 for Takr.com three months ago. Now in offering it the highest offer has been $150 and only one person interested.

I have seen domains posted that I do not own that usually sell in no time getting no offers or lowball offers.

The overall economy and people focused on summer and vacations supersedes a .tv purchase unless it is an unbelievable bargain. Again IMO

Dave, as Equity said, .tv domains aren't all equal. You'll notice that there is a big difference between one .tv domain and the next. I've seen lots of .tv domains on sale on NP Marketplace and elsewhere recently which just don't fit the extension at all and/or which have absolutely no development potential. This means that I wouldn't ever buy them and that many other domainers/developers/endusers would feel the same way about them. In tough economic times, those domains can indeed come down in value.

However, what I've noticed recently is that the value of really great .tv domains has gone up a lot. This is related to the fact that .tv awareness has gone up a lot recently and that many media companies are investing in them in order to prepare themselves for the strong growth in the online video market that's expected for the years to come.

Yesterday I was negotiating with someone to purchase an excellent .tv domain. I was up against a media company which offered $10K for it, I wasn't ready to bid higher than that, even though I'm pretty sure that this name has a wonderful development potential. However this just shows how expensive really great .tv domains have become, and if there are still some bargains out there, many excellent .tv domains are getting more and more out of reach everyday.

Now I know that many feel that it's difficult to sell average .tv domains at bargain prices nowadays. But that can be explained by the economic slowdown, by the fact that many domainers have to pay for expensive .tv premiums now, and that there are still lots of .tv gems to be handregged.

Even though it's still a bumpy ride, the ever increasing prices of excellent .tv domains makes me think that the future is really bright for .tv. However you shouldn't forget to think long and hard about development potential when it comes to registering .tv domains. Domains which don't fit the extension will always be harder to sell.

Jeez Dave, it's like you want us to jump in here, grab you by the shoulders, shake you hard and then lick your nose.

Or maybe that's just me.

It's a cyclical, a lot of folks are dumping stuff right now because it is pretty much the anniversary of the "new" release of tv last year. I myself am divesting because I don't want to renew certain things.

The ironic part is, at least to me, last year at this time there were some great things being picked up at reg fee. No offense to anyone, but in my opinion, 99% of what is being reg'd these days is not nearly as good. Ironically, I have told people what I was told long ago, look in the for sale section rather then regging by hand at least 75% of the time.

Sometimes I wish I would have listened more carefully, but don't we all.

Geo, Generic, and brandable one word .TV domains have value.

Agreed.

Try to avoid names that will have somewhat hard time selling even in .com if you are just planning on flipping.

i think a good portion of this is the economy....

i also think its the year for developments and brandable names as local said...i would also include besides the geo market but the porn names will only go up as well.

i know with me personally i am trimming my names down and its been a tough year for me....

however with these challenges we are facing, economy and not much buying here in the .tv market place, my view points on .tv is stronger then ever....

Where have you seen this activity which concerns you Dave? Are you referring to the marketplace?

That pretty much sums it up.
I have noticed the bids on my top names (all Geo's) and names of my friends have went up month after month, maybe up about 50% from last year.

Quality .tv's are doing great, lots of end user interest and values rising by at least 50% on last year (in my experience anyway)

Many are buying poor/average .tv's and then trying to flip them but most of the time it's not working so they drop prices and it makes the whole marketplace look a little desperate to sell at any price. IMHO

Actually, stepping back from the day to day minutia, I think that .TV has taken a huge leap forward in terms of interest, value, and sales.

A little more than a year ago, say early 2007, you could still hand reg some modestly good geos, a smattering of keywords, and very good keywords/geos were changing hands at barely low to mid x,xxx.

Now x,xxx are a weekly or biweekly occurance - heck I've even sold a few in that range which were hand regged a little over a year ago, and xx,xxx are not uncommon. I doubt you could buy a top 10 GEO (city, state, or country) for under 25,000 today.

Very good summation.

The cream rises to the top, and especially in .tv. Poor to middling names sit gathering dust with little interest from domainers. Its been said before, but you do need to proactively market and target end-users.

Perhaps this is what you are observing - the end result of last year's regging fury as some try to dump names before renewal dates. While some of the names are decent, most are not good enough to encourage someone to open their wallet when their boots are overflowing.

More recently, end users, or their proxies, are actively trying to buy .tv domains which perfectly fit their niche, especially if their niche has a natural fit with video and streaming media. I see this with increasing interest in some of my .tv domains.

Overall, IMO, the market value of .tv is moving higher, and has accelerated from early last year.
