I just read a post where someone was surprised that several domains with 'forum' in them were expiring. What is the consensus of a brandforum type name where the brand is recognizable (or has potential)?

I think the value of those might vary from person to person. But they definitely do hold some value. I know I'll buy almost any domain that has www.[noun]forums.com

I'd say that the forum domains would be a good buy. Looking at them from a monetization standpoint, I think forums are pretty difficult. If you're developing and running the forum and use adsense to monetize, it takes a significant amount of time and effort just to get the forum. Plus loads of work to keep it popular and running. The upside is I think there is good potential for earning from running a forum, if you know what you're doing :)

ALOT of time & work

The value is mainly coming from the effort you put in it.

Yes the word "forum" or "forums" is becoming more and more widespread. Non web-savvy users are finally starting to figure out what a forum is. There certainly is potential in these names, but from my own research, all of the good ones are taken. You also can't forget that forums are very difficult to start, especially ones like this one.

What's your take on [noun/plural]forum.com type domains?

Actually, these are the only names I invest in right now, and the only names I actually have a clue about the value. I have over 15 forum/forums/talk names, around 5-7 of them are top quality.

They go usually anywhere from mid $xxx to mid $x,xxx. They are a great investment as well.

I've looked at the years 2002, 2003, and even 2004, and forum names went for low $xx. For example, I had a forum name "htmltalk.com", which in 2004 sold for $20:

http://www.namepros.com/domains-for...g-net-clubbed-org.html?highlight=htmltalk.com

Now in 2005, I sold it for $500 very easily, I could've probably tried even targetting high $xxx but was more desperate for the money. I had 4 beautiful offers for $xxx, so it wasn't luck.

I wish I can show you all these transactions, but they are on a forum which I am not allowed to post on NamePros which I think is ridiculous. The same goes with designforums.com, in 2003 it was in an auction and top bid was $29. In January of 2006 it sold for $4400. So there you go, these names are on a HUGE rise.
