Using Past .com Sales as Value Indicator for Another Extension

Today, I found a keyword phrase whose .com sold for a little over $20,000 a few months ago. The only thing available now is the .biz and .us.

Now, I know that I will not be able to get anywhere near the amount the .com did, but do you think it would be a good ROI to purchase one of the other two extensions?

You'll get all kinds of opinions and you just need one person out there who thinks so and wants that domain. I would say probably and I'm just basing that on something I'm working on. When I first got into this on the side, I was looking for something where I can see all domain sales and easy to read. There are sites out there with sales, like dnjournal, soldnames, dnsaleprice etc. but what I did is put them all on a spreadsheet and now I can see:

keyword/domain .com .net .org. ...........

And can see what they sold for across the board.

Just started it and what I've seen from .com ----- .us is a range of .85% - 2%. But just started it (have 600+ domains so far) and only have a handful of sales both in .com and .us I think it's a good selling point, a way to market them, pointing out the sales in different extensions.

Figure I would throw in a few examples:

in $
christian
.com - 600,000
.us - 13,500

bingo
.com - 1,100,000
.us - 15,000

computer
.com - 2,100,000
.us - 17,000

IMO, if the other extensions are still available, it means the buyer did not even bother to do defensive registrations. If they didn't consider buying the remaining names for < $10 each, unlikely they will pay a premium.
Plus, many sales are one of a kind and unlikely to repeat...

Some people don't even think of that. I remember somebody posting all the .org and .net available in .com. You figure they would go ahead and spend the $7 to get the other extensions but a lot of people don't.

Or some people just figure they spent enough on the .com that they shouldn't pick up the other domains...

JB Lions,

So, would you consider a .us over a .biz, based on your research?

I just started the spreadsheet, so don't have much in those domains yet but a little of what I have:

couple of .us - .biz

foods.us - 20,000
foods.biz - 11,350

meningitis.us - 15,000
meningitis.biz - 15,000

couple of .com - .biz

find.com - 1,200,000 find.biz - 10,630

wine.com - 3,300,000 wine.biz - 4,250

I personally like .us better than .biz but that's just my preference. Later on when I get more domains up and compare them, I'll get a better feel for it.

I had a post but it went into moderation for some reason. Alright went thru this time.

couple of .us to .biz sales

foods.us - 20,000
food.biz - 11,350

meningitis.us - 15,000
meningitis.biz - 15,000

couple of .com to .biz sales

find.com - 1,200,000
find.biz - 10,630

wine.com - 3,300,000
wine.biz - 4,250

I personally like .us better than .biz but others might like .biz better. Later on as I do more work on it, I should get a better feel.

Yep, I normally don't buy the other extensions when I have the .com, for sites I've actually built out. I figure most will use the .com and my sites will probably be better than what other people do with other extensions, so it's nothing I've ever been concerned about.
