I bet there are some cool inactive usernames from early in the forum's life that some people might like to have.

For Charity I would definetly bid on a name I thought would be cool that otherwise would be unavailable. Plus, isn't that what we do here? Try to find the best name? :sold:

Just thinking outloud.

200NP$ on both Jeff and Sam.
:)

Etab's idea seems to be a good one (although maybe <10 threads would yield a better return)

We can do one thing. Lets say I am inactive for some years.

Then my username will be changed to Nick-NP

And the username Nick can be given to someone who is bidding. So that the inactive user can login to his account with Username Nick-NP and continue his Namepros journey.

Lets say I come back again after 2 years and try to login with ID Nick and My Password then? It will not get me logged in. So we need to show a message below the "Forgot Password?" message, something like "Been Inactive for Too Long?" ;)

If he clicks that link he gets to input his original username and he gets the substituted username which will be Nick-NP in this case example.

Usually we do not delete accounts that are inactive - But there have been a few cases where several staff members wanted their first name as a username. In those cases we have removed accounts, only if they were inactive for at least a year or two..

:hehe:

Lol, this is one of the funniest proposals I red recently. Though it might be a very good idea, as it might bring some charity funding!! :)

Some questions to speculate about:
- How long should such an auction last? Or what is a minimum price or such? I can imagine that selling names at 1 NP$ wouldn't be such a good idea ;)
- Quote Etab: "No response or login upon emailing user" ==> no response / login in which period? Like 2 weeks or such?
- What if the substituted name already exists? (if I'ld like to buy "John Doe" but "John Doe-NP" exists too) The system of substitution wouldn't work except if a new database entry would be made for it.
- What if the user owns domains at Namepros? Or if there is a lot of NP$ in their account? Contributed to charity? ... Of course I know that stuff won't be transferred to new username owner; but the first owner of the username wouldn't be abled to get to the domain management or NP$ funds with their earlier login details.
- Maybe a new rule could be imported like "2 years no activity (and the other requirements), username can put up to auction".

Just some thoughts. Good idea though !! :)

I personally see this whole idea causing nothing but trouble. First, how do you handle the past reputation and trader rating features? If someone was banned it was probably for good reason. On a forum you username is your idenity and how people identify with you. If the person that used to own the name AAAA was a scammer and then got banned and then I decided to buy the name I feel like people would probably associate the name with the scammer not with me. This also accounts for people on ignore lists and such. How would that all be handled? Just my opinion but I would not want to change my name.

I got my name :tu:

The user had 0 posts, 0 TR, 0 NP$, and had never revisited the forum after the day he signed up, 5 years ago.

You just have to hope your name was never ever used, if it was, you don't have much chance.

I think this is a grand idea. No one would want my name if I went inactive anyhoo :hehe:
I think Etab is right on the dot with the criteria there.

I don't think anyone's username would be taken if they had any reputation or trade rating. If they were a spammer, I'm sure no one even remembers. The user would be completely refreshed i would assume (ignore lists cleared, etc.)

The user Dan was inactive for like 3 years when I asked to have it.

About, rep, trade rating and NP's I think this would be negligibe as you would keep your same account only change your name. Just like a name change in the NP store.
