Is the .us dead or just hasnt picked up?

Should I launch a service under .us or .net ?

It is targeted for the US market only.

US is well down the totem pole right now as far as end user interest.

The exception are domains like Florida.us, Omaha.us, etc.
Those work well extension wise.

.NET will not be overtaken anytime soon, if ever as the 2nd best.
.US will certainly never overtake it.

.NET is used heavily in the US and Internationally. US appeals to Americans only.

Yes... but let us hope in the future .us will be a power extension beating out .net (i don't ever see anything coming close to .com).

We just need some huge brand name from the US to put their domain as .us and have the .com redirect to it and that will be our starting point.

America is a huge market (only topped by China) and one thing going for us is patriotism. People love supporting America and everything it stands for. Along with this fact, many of the international companies have their roots in US soil.

I'm just saying that if they start to jump on board with the .US extension then I can easily see it as a clear number 3 extension and I would even go as far as saying it might be more popular than .net.

Give it 5 years though, this kind of thing doesn't happen in a year.

The problem with .US is it isn't even the top extension in the US, or even close. COM is basically the TLD of the US in reality.

So there is limited room for .US, it will never even be a .cn/.de/.co.uk

.US is much closer in respect level to all the other extensions with end users, than it is with COM/NET/ORG

Because it isn't even seen as the CCTLD of the US, and there is limited international appeal the growth potential is severely limited.

I agree with most of your order. Mine are.

COM
NET
ORG (Where appropriate)

I would put .info slightly above .US, and .Biz is not a serious contender in my mind.

When I am hand-reging a keyword domain, I prioritize extensions in this order:

.com
.net
.info
.us
.org
.biz

.org usually doesn't make sense for the type of product sites that I am purchasing. .net and .info have some real sales behind them so that is why I have prioritized them above .us (see DNJournal).

Should .us be higher up on the list?
