Since it's been decided that the US will keep control of the Internet through ICANN, I wonder what this will do to the value and usage of .US domains?
It seems this will just underscore the usage of .com in the states, because it's what everyone is used to.

I felt that if internet control would have been split up, it might have made .US an even stronger extension.
(Not that I'm saying I'm not glad we're still in control.. please don't turn this into a country against country thread)

I would still like to see .US get big, considering every other country is going to ccTLD's.

What do you think will be the short term future of .US? Do you think it will still catch on and even be widely accepted here in the future?

I think the .us has a bright future regardless of the current situation with ICANN and all of the shenanigans that are going on over the root nameservers. The .com continues to reign king, especially here in the US, but awareness of the .us extension is growing.

I think the .us extension has an important factor that it can easily seize upon. What's a more patriotic domain than .us? In these times, it can be a strong factor for business especially if you're targeting an American audience. I think we'll see a trend towards the ccTLDs with other countries as well and so the US will follow.

Certainly, as long as the cost of registration remains reasonable, the namespace will surely flourish.

.US has a certain "official" connotation to it that I like, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I am thankful for .US: #2 in my list of revenue generating, developed website is a .US domain.

My view is that a great majority of people that use the net don't really know ( and are not interested ) in the political ramblings going on behind the scenes.

From what I have seen most country specific TLD's are growing in popularity so I see no reason for the .us one to be any different, in fact it will probably out perform most in the short run ( China will be the only blimp on the horizon as far as that goes ).

The general public ( a majority of users ) are getting so used to TLD's that are not .com now, unlike a couple of years ago.

I think that properly targeted Country specific TLD's are the way forward ... To me certainly more than things like .info / .biz and ones like .tv / .ws that are country specific but have been 'hi-jacked' for other meanings.

Just my ramblings :)

All the best.

PS
Although am in the UK have had too many good times in the States to turn this into a battle ... Plus most of my clients are there :)

I've invested some in the .us extension and I want to buy more, so I'm glad to hear that others think it will still do well.
Hopefully, over time, .us will be second only to .com here in the states.

Well, development is the real answer. You should consider developing some of your .US names. Dot US will become far more recognized and mainstream as the avergae Internet surfers gets used to visiting developed websites within the .US namespace.

As always, IMO.

Interesting, I've seen quite the opposite in my online experiences. However, in this case I was refering to the population as a whole and the "American made" stamp has quite a large influence on a large group of people. That same psychology will most certainly carry over to the internet. It's just a matter of time.

No offense intended here, but I am basing my opinions off of everday experience with people who live in the US since I live there myself.

Hi Denver,

Sorry I don't think I put my point quite correctly ( same people seperated by a different language and all that :) ).

What I was really commenting on was the ICAAN situation that was mentioned in the original post, If I asked most people I meet socially what ICAAN was then they would not know even though they use the net a lot. People in our line of trade obviously know a bit more.

What I was trying to get across was that country specific domains are gaining ground almost everywhere I look .... And certainky here in the UK, where people used to look for their information at a .com they are becoming more open to .co.uk and the same applies to the States.

Basically I think that .us will expand ( as will .co.uk ).

No offence taken :)

Sorry if this does not explain it properly but 3.45 in the morning here.

All the best

Richard
