Domainers suck! Thinking up good names when everything is taken

Hi guys,

I've recently tried to be a developer for a few projects, and can vouch that we domainers have made it hard to come up with good names in just about any field you care to think of!

If anyone else here finds themselves in a similar situation, I've written a guide to coming up with good domain names for development - if most of the obvious options are already taken. You can read it here.

As always, it's a collaborative effort for domainers, so if you have any tips, or examples of creative names you've come up with yourself (say out of desperation), I'd *love* to hear it

Good stuff! I couldn't agree more.

I do a good deal of development now and I've found that every decent domain is taken. With that said, I've had a lot of success just shooting an email to people and paying under $50.00 for the domain I want. They make a little profit and I am not paying much more than reg fee.

Obviously this won't work for forum domains or really strong keyword domains, but it has been a great way to get the names I want for an affordable price. This also helps get me past Google's sandbox because it isn't a fresh registration.

I agree, and as a developer and a domainer i'm torn. It seems backwards that so many people resort to developing long, dashed up, unintuitive domains because all of the good domains are parked with astronomical pricetags. Real websites with useful information and resources don't end up where you would expect them. Sure, there are some people with big budgets who want a specific domain at all costs, but they are few and far between. The vast majority of domain consumers don't have thousands of dollars to drop on a personal site, information site, small family business site or startup. Most websites won't make that money back, ever, so it's a much better investment to pick a bad name for $8.
