Uniques / hits?

When I check my site stats, I will have something like 5 unique and 500 hits, I know I have not had 500 people visit my site, so what are the hits??

The number of requests for files, typically.
AKA: If you browse your site for 500 pages-worth of material, you'd have 500 hits, and 1 unique visitor.
Methinks that's right at least...

I think also each image is counted as a hit. So lets say you have 7 images that get loaded on your home page. Then someone going to your home page would be recorded as 8 hits.

I don't know that much about webdesign but I thought that hits were when your keywords were picked up in a search engine ??

one more thing....

lets say if i visit your website and i visited home page which contains 10 images so thats 10 hits, but then i went to the support page thats another 10 hits and then i went to price page thats another 10 hits

so you ends up with 1 unique visitor but 30 hits.
