.uk .UK domain name release

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
Is anyone registering .UK domains? They opened registration for anyone and there's a bunch of great one-word domains up for grabs. I haven't heard much about this extension on this forum and wanted to know all of your take.

UK residents already owning the .CO.UK extension received first dibs of its equivalent but now it's open registration. These .UK names seems to be much more better and catchy than .co.uk, but we'll see how things go. I suppose it's still too early to say.

There's still many great domains up for grab.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The problem with land rushes of this type in ccTLDs is that domainers with little or no experience of ccTLDs will use dotCOM rules to register what they think are valuable domain names. Some may be valuable over time. The .UK launch is far more complicated than an ordinary ccTLD land rush because the competition isn't from .COM and the gTLDs but rather from within the ccTLD itself.

What will happen with .UK, for the moment, is the same thing that happened with .COM and .CO. Non-domainers in the target market will automatically correct the .UK to .co.uk and the .UK site will, initially, lose traffic to the .co.uk version. (This is what happened with Overstock and o.co.)

There is another effect in strong ccTLDs that causes problems for domaining with generic keyword domains. That is the identification of the people in the ccTLD country with "their" ccTLD. The extension becomes less important than other keywords in a domain that put the domain name in context. Thus while pizza might be a good generic term, pizza+london might be more relevant to ordinary people. Outside the 30K or so truly generic and high value keywords, registration patterns in ccTLDs tend to get very complex. These patterns also exist in .COM in the registrations associated with each country but becaause .COM is a large TLD, it is hard for domainers to see these patterns in about 141 million registrations.

The big winners, initially, will be those in the UK market and who know the Nominet system inside out. Despite the low numbers of sales on some non-UK reporting sites, the .UK ccTLD market is quite active. After the initial burst of registrations, the most important pattern will emerge over November 2019 to February 2020. This is when the normal registration rates for .UK will kick in as the .UK emerges from the traditional land rush period (first six months or so of general availability). The best that .UK can hope for is that it is over 15% of .co.uk new registrations per month. This is because the momentum in the ccTLD will still be with .co.uk registrations for the immediate future. The burst of new registrations from the land rush is exceptional but it plays a small part in establishing the resale value of .UK domain names. It could take as long as five years before the .UK values stabilise. As an indication of what happens when a ccTLD is launched badly, there is an offer on .EU domain names on some registrars for 1 Euro for the first year (approximately and 85% discount) because the .EU ccTLD is losing registrations. Hopefully the .UK won't end up like the .EU.

Regards...jmcc

@wizard Share all of the .UK domains you were able to successfully catch. What service did you use?

No I personally never heard of dropped.uk but I know GoDaddy is listing a bunch of .uk domains in their auction network.

I would have thought GoDaddy would get first dibbs to much because they're the largest domain registrar on the market. More people hold their domains with GoDaddy than with any other service.

I run my own drop system so i use my own service i caught several one short words names and a few lll.uk so far will list them all and end of week.

Yesterday I got a 3 letter adult .UK name beginning with c, ending with m and with a u in the middle.

I don't know whether to feel proud of myself or whether I should be ashamed of myself for having it on my list assuming others didn't... :penguin::hilarious:

Oh wow! I actually had a terrible experience with SnapNames. They're super shady! Super unethical. For backorders, I personally stick to NameJet, GoDaddy, and Pool.

From my backorders so far SnapNames were able to catch "Coin /uk". 34 bidders.

Wow guys look at this UKS already on sale
Its interesting that Blockhain.com owns blockchain.co.uk, yet they ignored the blockchain.uk. Good luck to the registrant.

From my reading, it might take some time but .uk should do very well. Certainly .co.uk is much more widely recognized, but it shouldn't take too long for the shorter, attractive .uk extension to gain popularity.

I regged a few like...
paycrypto.uk
paywallet.uk
I felt like that, but it's not looking very promising is it with big corporations failing to even bother to reg them.

Nissan, Spar, Umbro to name a few. Also new brands like Voxi that could probably get away with the switch didn't get their name. Other random ones that I noticed are WD40, Honeywell and probably many more.

I am receiving more emails now with the domains I pre-registered, all saying they're up for auction. Such b.s :(

Yes good names will be sent to auction all the best names are gone in the first minute and thats around 300,000 names dropped per day..

Hello,

I'm a noob into domaining and I think I've overdone it with the .uk domains as a lot of people told me there is almost no value in them.

So far I was able to catch the following :

bestmates.uk
cashout.uk
cryptolab.uk
dishy.uk
fitnessgym.uk
lawyerdirectory.uk
londonlawyer.uk
londonsolicitor.uk
medschool.uk
megayacht.uk
moneyorder.uk
mybody.uk
privatecoach.uk
saleauto.uk
tireshop.uk

What do you guys think ?

if a .uk domain is available to hand register today, does that mean that it is free from .co.uk owner and i will have full rights to own it after i register it ?
If the .UK is free now it's as free as any other domain. There is no connection between any two .co.uk and .UK combination.

I hope that helps

Could anyone here on the forum tell me whether any businesses are publicly advertising the shortened version .uk (without the co) on billboards etc

Yes plenty are in London and on the tube but only decent short brands which they own the co.uk version

Yes. I am and it's not going very well :wtf: haha
Yeah I used GoDaddy to pre-register a bunch but GoDaddy sent me these error emails because they were unable to capture the domains and just refunded me. So far, every single domain I tried pre-registered was rejected. For two of the domains, they sent an email saying they were unsuccessful with capturing it but then sends me another email with the domain up for auction in their network. Super shady and suspicious.
