The mayor of an Australian outback mining town has come under fire for urging unattractive women to move in, assuring them they will find a man because there is a shortage of women.

John Moloney, mayor of Mount Isa in northwestern Queensland, told a newspaper his town was a place for "ugly ducklings to flourish into beautiful swans" and called on the "beauty-disadvantaged" to flock there.

In the face of outrage over his remarks, Moloney stood by his comments, saying he did not mean to cause offence but wanted to highlight the gender imbalance in the remote town of some 25,000 people.

I do think being beautiful is a bonus. But beauty is a very subjective term. It has a different meaning for different person. I concur I would sometimes prefer an ugly woman with a beautiful personality than a beautiful woman with an ugly personality.

"Raise Sheep", i think you are refering to our New Zealand neigbours! Mt Isa is not realy the kind of place many women would find exciting. It is a mining boom town, with many employees flying in and out, back home to more tolerable areas of Australia to live.

In summer it is as "hot as hell" and if it was not for the very high paying mining jobs, not many people, men or women, would probably want to live there. Basically, if you have no job their, you leave. This is quite a common occurence in many remote ares of Australia at present, as the current commodities boom, driven by China, allows many "blue collar" workers to take home pay of $150,000 plus a year.

The other issue that remote towns such as Mt Isa face is accomodation shortages, which fuel super high rents. So to sum things up, if you were a women, without a mining job, paying $500 rent a week for a single bed in a share house, in the middle of the desert, being hit on by every man you met,........what would you do! Leave fast.

Once again, I'm not a great looking guy and my last GF was someone I would never have looked at twice normally but she was kind, thoughtful, fun to be with.. best of all, she liked ME! :hehe: That's a plus! Never hat "that" happen before!

And this is the truth.. I met a woman on PlentyOfFish not long ago.. her pic was deceptively small and I'm thinking "OK, she has a glass eye" (and she did) and I was thinking, "well, I can look past that" but turned out it was an old pic.. maybe 40 pounds ago and she forgot to mention her prescription drug addiction. I'll keep looking thanks.. :lol:
