I always find it amazing how someone so quickly grabs a domain just because it was in the news...

Late last night, a trade agreement was reached between Canada and America. Mexico already had a deal in place with the US so last night, Canada finally reached an agreement. The agreement was announced last night that it will be called USMCA which stands for United States Mexico Canada Agreement. So lo and behold, someone registers USMCA.ca.

And no, it was not me who registered it. lol

I find zero value in registering domains like this. What do you think?

Well, a good indicator of value would be a comparison to nafta.ca, which remains undeveloped and goes to a sales lander. And that one's been registered since 2000. The only advantage to USMCA is the "Trump Factor".

The .net was taken today as well. At least the .ca has a relevance with the extension.

Waste of money.

It's still NAFTA only the name had been changed to keep the current incumbent of the Whitehouse from throwing more toys out of the pram.

It's a bit of a sweeping statement to say that it's not worth registering domains for things that were mentioned in the news. After all the covfefe guy nearly made a mint.... but he didn't sell fast enough. Rick Schwartz saw value in buying Deplorable.com/Deplorables.com.

There are plenty of things worth registering if they are referred to a lot at the moment. Whilst usmca.ca isn't worth it, you've just got to pick them wisely....

I found DonaldTrumpReelection.com and many more like that 1-2 months ago.
Didn't register because I don't want to mess with that category.
I just checked, someone registered september 22nd.
I don't regret it.
donaldJtrumpreelection.com is still around.

I went down that path many years ago and learned, in general, it does not pay off. There was a time I scoured the net and news services looking for 'breaking' people, places, things, etc. and would then run to the computer to register a name...no more!

Not sure, but it would surprise me if I broke even on sales of that category of names vs the cost to register and keep.

OK I will admit I am one of those who registered a USMCA :xf.wink:

I did look up and NAFTA has only sold once in a bizarre long word. I also know that in general sales of names like this are challenging (like I hold CPTPP in the .trade extension but no interest at all). However, when NAFTA started the Internet was barely a thing. Also, for several reasons, at least in Canada, seems way more public engagement this time around.

Of course the .com was registered long ago. The .net also gone. I see that someone had beat me to .info and .trade by an hour or two. I'm thinking the US Motorcycle Coaching Association may have some people calling to see if they want to sell their .org :xf.smile:.

At the time I checked, there were tons of other extensions, many of which I see have now been registered. Anyway, I picked up what I thought was the next best after .trade and the legacy ones. And it is still a WIP but I did almost instantly build a reference site on it, that I plan to expand significantly the next little while. I mainly plan to focus on developing the FAQ list.

https://usmca.site/

I realize it is not, yet, very visually interesting, and lots of work to do on site, both adding content and making it look nice.

I have not listed it for sale, yet at least, but if someone comes calling I would sell it. I find it kind of connects to my interests in conventional investing, so may just manage it for a year and see how much traffic it gets.

So what do people think? Crazy to register it? Crazy to try to develop a site? Crazy extension to use?

Personally Bob for me it's a tough sell using long acronyms with new G's, just looks far too messy. imo they only work well with the classics, .net, org, com and ccTLDs..

But the .site paired with yours, I guess aint so bad..not familiar with .site in the sense I don't own any names in it, but if it's popular traffic corridor then you should do ok.

It does not make sense in ANY extension other than .com

.com encompasses all 3 parties and to break it up into .us .ca .mx or similar has very little value in my opinion.
