Is a good typo a misspelling? or hitting the wrong letter like an "m" for an "n"? I would assume a misspelling is more common.

typo is a misspelling of a good domain, such as gmail.com you can register fmail.com or hmail.com because people can press this by mistake and you can get hits :)

But is it legal to register domain names, very similar to trademarks, organization names and so on ?

but what do you think happens more often, a misspelling or a wrong key stroke?

It all depends on what it is. If it's some really long, rarely used word than a mispelling is likely to occur, if its shorter, then probably a wrong key stroke

Typos can infringe on TMs depending on what the domain is. Infringing on TMs is a good way to land yourself in court, so tread carefully with typos (i.e. stay away from TM issues).

do people type d's instead of s's for example or vice versa? is that common? i've already bought a few typo names, and I made some bad calls, no one types them in.

Similar is not the same. They have only trademarked their name. Most big companies would register typos of their own domains anyway.

But it is illegal to use a name similarly confusing to a trademark.

Make sure the mispelt name you register doesn't infringe on the original Trademarks or Copyright names. If you do so it may be considered a case of Typosquatting and may land you in trouble.

what is the usual process with tm domains if the company choose to take action. is their first step usualy just a c&d or is it ever more than this?

Yes, you normally will get a C&D, but I believe the company does not have to send one before commencing litigation. Most send the C&D because it will potentially save them legal fees if you comply with their demand.

Great typos also include the omission of the period (.) or hitting the l key instead of the period after the www
For example, typos such as wwwmovies.com or wwwlmovies.com occur quite frequently. If you can get these kinds of typos for high overture keywords or high pay-per-click prices they can bring in excellent parking income.

Yeah, typos are good. I accidently went onto goggle.com once, and it trys to install this "anti" spyware thing.

To answer the OP, my typing is worse than my spelling.
