Are .com the only extensions good for this? Are .net worthwhile as well?

I'm just starting out with domain names and am planning to mainly stick to .com's like everyone here seems to be suggesting.

I also am primarily interested in parking domains to begin with and getting type in traffic - I won't be developing any sites for quite a while.

I have come across one very good domain that would be worth a lot as a .com. It is a .biz though so obviously worth a lot less. Do these get any type in traffic at all?

If not are they worth anything as an investment?

Without question .com will receive the most type in traffic.

However I also have .net and .us keyword domains that receive some type in traffic, albeit less than the .com.

In my opinion .biz is not worth getting involved with. I like .com, .net, then .us. or the country code where you reside.

Also .org can work with the right keywords.

Good Luck

Yes, the .biz seems to be the last choice of the top 6 TLDs, but I have some, and the thing is that if you are parked someplace that allows you to send traffic, or at least get some links to your domain they can work pretty well. But aside from .com, .net, and .org the raw type-in traffic is very, very low.

On the other hand if you plan on someday creating a site for the domain, that might be worth getting the .biz if it's othewise a good domain name...

Thanks for the advice. I have some follow up questions...

I have registered a few domains and they aren't getting any traffic to speak of. I don't mind at all because actually registering a domain has been a learning experience that I enjoyed.

I'd like to know though, assuming you do get a domain which gets type in traffic only and that goes to a parked page (all my pages are parked on Sedo btw), what kind of traffic do you need to be getting on a daily or monthly basis to break-even in terms of reg fee?

I know this will vary a lot depending on the CPC's and CTR's for different terms, but as a rule of thumb, how much traffic would you want to be getting for typos to be worth your while?

Second question - how do you use Alexa, Yahoo, Google tools, etc to work out which domains to go for? I don't really understand what the metrics tell you - I've had a look at the information on PremiumDrops but still don't understand TLD score -> it seems to be some kind of estimate?

I have some experience with PPC so am familiar with the Google adwords preview tool and have used it to find typos that get searched on. They don't seem to be resulting in traffic to my sites though so I'm wondering just how popular typos need to be to be entered as urls?

Hope someone can give me some tips, I'd appreciate it.

One more question to add. If I find a typo I like and there are existing typos that go to parked pages, is there anyway to analyze whether or not these existing domains are working for their owners - by way of comparison?

Don't forget that .ccTLD will sometimes get more type-in traffic in the respective country than .com (apparently this is the case with .CO.UK).

People will often type in a ccTLD because they feel it will bring up are more appropriate result for them, or that it is more reliable or trustworthy

That is true what jack1993 is say.. i believe ccTLD are more reliable or trustworthy, thats just from my experience.

Oddjob, here is my response to your questions:

In general, normal sedo accounts don't seem to get much from parking. They were the first place I tried and it didn't get me much. Of course, my domains were not very good either and that is a huge factor with parking.

You need to have either lots of traffic, or have keywords that command high bid prices, or (oh happy days) both. In my early days, I didn't consider either one much, but now I focus on the high bid amounts and try to find domains with at least some traffic. If I only get one click a month for one dollar, I am making a profit. I want to AT LEST break even during the year.

I don't think anyone can tell you how much traffic you "should" be getting, since it's going to vary so much. So I would focus on what you are getting and make sure your domain is making and not losing money. Unless, of course it has a sales value that will be increasing. If not, sell or dump it.

For metrics you have to realize that the numbers are only "estimates" and may or may not relate to your domain name. Alexa scores are "rankings" not actual traffic numbers and I don't trust their page views as being meaningful. I would only used them in a very general way. I hear the Yahoo data is now getting very old and is not being updated. And Google gives you a good indication, but not actual numbers. So to me the tools can be useful, but they are somewhat poor.

I go after keyword phrase domains. Yesterday I hand regged annuityfund.org & annuityfund.info. I generally look in Yahoo/Overture to find phrases with traffic, then check Google for ones with high bid prices. Then I see if any of them are available. Most of the time it's only the trash TLDs like .info, .biz, and .us. Other times I can get .net and .org. If the domain is really hot and they are all taken, I will check the domain with hyphens. Often I can find a .com that way. Now you will hear almost everyone trash-talk these domains with non-.com and hyphens, but my best revenue domain that I have parked is a 3-word, 2 hyphen .info domain. They may not all do that well, but the fact that they CAN should encourage people to try them.

[Disclaimer: out of 483 domains in my parking account, only 46 made a dollar or more last month. And my total income was only about $200. So if my domain registrations are costing me about $4,000 a year, I am only making about $1,200 at this point. Clearly this is not a good business yet and I need to do more work at optimizing my pages and dumping domains that are not and will not make any money.]

And lastly, just because typos or anything else is searched for it doesn't mean that people are going to do a direct search for it with a .com. I don't have any numbers for you, but I suspect the search numbers have to be pretty high before you will see much to your domains... :)

Thanks very much for the helpful replies everyone, especially that detailed one nielsencl.

I have actually been getting a few clicks on Sedo recently which is promising but the payouts have been only 0.02-0.05 euro, so I'm not going to give up my day job yet. I'm thinking about changing to a different parking company. Any recommendations?

I would visit Parkquick.com and look at their reviews of parking services. You may have to try a few before you find the best one for your domains. Make sure you read all the rules they have, since they are not all the same.
