One of the few things I do before the market opens is to read about the movers and shakers of the day. So there it was the almighty Tyco. I know what you are thinking, no it is not about former CEO and COO sentencing, nor is it about a new accounting scandal. This is good news if not for the investors, at least for identity/naming consultant. Tyco board has unanimously agreed to split Tyco into three entities (three new kingdoms). This is according to a report on Yahoo Finance.

“I am confidence that this time around, Tyco is for real,” said Elie of NamingJournal.com.

This may not mean much to Wall Street or investors, but to identity/naming agencies this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of an historic event. Thus, the quest for who will have the honor of naming the two new companies has already begun.

“I think Tyco management and board should borrow a page from the old AT&T when it broken into several companies in 1980s. Instead of naming the new companies after its likeliness, the new companies did the opposite. Although AT&T retain it name, but the new companies took on names like Lucent, South Bell, Bell South, etc. This allows the new company to stand out as independent of their former parent company (AT&T).

I recommend that Tyco open the naming bid to all agencies, individual or group interested in submitting names for new the companies. By doing so, I believe this will give the two new companies free publicities it desperately need and the opportunity to show to its customers and competitors that they are truly independent. Moreover, that the new companies represent new era and open to fresh innovative ideas.

What do you think?
