.tv .TV overtaking other extensions.

If one searches Google for indexed sites with a particular TLD, it is apparent that .TV is catching up, and fast.

Today's "site:.(tld)" search yielded these results:

.biz = 21 million sites
.tv = 18 million sites
.cc = 8 million sites
.mobi = 4 million sites
.name = 2.3 million sites

A few months ago, .tv was lagging behind by a wide margin. Now it looks like the total number of .tv sites will pass .biz very soon.

Let's get back to the main purpose of this thread.

Dottie checked the number of indexed .tv pages on Google on February 1st 2008 and found 40,400,000

I checked it again on May 21st and found 56,600,000.

Well, I've just checked it again today, June 28th, and there are currently 67,100,000 !

That's over 10 million more indexed .tv pages on Google in just over a month !

That's really impressive and shows how fast .tv is growing on the development side of things.

Well I'm not sure there's a way to know exactly how many indexed .net or .org pages there were on Google in February and May, but these much older TLDs are fairly stable in % and don't have the huge growth that .tv has been experiencing in the past 2 or 3 years.

There are still many many more .net and .org pages indexed on Google than .tv ones. But that's because they exist as major gTLDs since 1985, while .tv has only really become mainstream in the past 2 or 3 years since the beginning of the boom in the online video market.

Right now, there are :
2,170,000,000 .net pages
and
1,890,000,000 .org pages indexed on Google.

So that means that .tv has still a long way to go to catch up, but at the current rate (like 10-15% growth per month, which is huge), it could catch up in a few years time, especially as more and more corporations, media companies, tv channels, newspapers and businesses are investing in .tv and developing great projects around .tv domains.

But there's more. If you compare for example .net and .tv, you shouldn't only compare the number of indexed pages on Google, but you should also compare their search volume (on Google Trends) :

As you can see, the search volume for .tv has been growing very rapidly over the past few years, while it's been decreasing quickly for .net

Many things will change on the Internet in the years to come, with the new TLDs, with the convergence between TV and the Internet, etc.

As TV is an extremely powerful, brandable and internationally recognizable word, and as video will take a much bigger importance on the Internet in the years to come, I would expect that the growth rate of .tv will actually increase significantly in the years to come and that it could well get ahead of .net and .org in a few years time.

but... since .tv (video oriented) pages are "deeper" than traditional webpages, i would expect less pages on a .tv site than .net or .org sites.

example:
widget.tv in 1 page could show videos of 100 different widgets. where widget.org/net would most likely be segmented into several pages because of being heavily text/image based. this does not mean that you can't put video on .org/net sites, it just means the majority don't have video as the central method of content.

That's very true indeed. Video sites are adding a third dimension to the web and that's why many .tv pages are much "deeper" as you said than most .net/.org ones.

So the difference between .tv and .net/.org is actually much smaller than it seems.

Moreover, the important things to see here are that :
- the growth rate of developed .tv pages is huge (10-15% increase per month)
- the search volume for .tv is increasing rapidly and regularly (while it's decreasing quickly for .net for example)

That's definitely excellent news for .tv and it shows once again that it's not only a fast-growing extension but also a very solid one, as it's development-driven and as lots of .tv sites are of a very high quality and built by big corps, tv networks, established businesses and brilliant new media companies.
