I own several hundred TV.com domains. I think they have obvious value. They are great for defensive regs and can be developed as stand alones as well. If I own both the .TV and TV.com I will use the .tv and forward the .com.
There is zero doubt in my mind long term .TV will carry more of intrinsic value. They will be the more intuitive of the two and in some cases will go head head to head with the generic .com itself in terms of video channels. The TV.com will be second fiddle in these cases.
One thing is clear BOTH will be viable and you will not need both to run a successful business. However, keep in mind, Hollywood.tv is a generic just like Hollywood.com is. HollywoodTV.com is not the generic. It is the best TV.TLD out there but is still 2nd tier in this regard and this gap will grow. TV.org, TV.co.uk TV.tv will all be used as well.
At the end of the day type in will increase for both TV.com and .TV. Both can be separate sites and both can make money at the same time and both will bleed traffic traffic to each other. In fact, it is way too easy to tell in what proportions this will happen. I have several .TV domains where the TV.com is developed in which my traffic is continually growing.
My feeling is, as .TV gets better branded and used in the coming years far less traffic will bleed over to the TV.com and far more will go to the .TV. With effective branding of a .TV site and if you meet the expectation of quality video content, you will be successful and own the "premiere" brand.
Yes right now .com is king but in the case of TV video sites, TV will be king IMO second to only the generic .com in some cases, not the TV.com. We are in the very very early stages of this. Any way you look at it, head to head any .tv vs TV.com, TV is shorter and generic, the .com is longer in every case. That is why intuitively .TV makes more sense.
I think we look back at this thread years down the line and realize how much people underestimated the future battle between .com and .tv, not TV.com which will be used of course but way less valuable in many many cases.
One other huge factor I forgot to mention.
.TV works across all country codes worldwide while TV.com does not not. Meaning TV means the same thing to all people across the world. Many do not use .com but their own country codes. These people are far more apt to embrace .TV (and are) then TV.com. This gap will widen too as many do not use .com. They will look to .TV for their video channels, not TV.com. So world dynamics are a vital part of the debate in terms of preference.
