Transferring domains

I registered my first domain in 1993. Newbie? I suffered an illness six years ago that made me lose memory and I can't retain it.

I have a dozen domains spread among registrars (had over 400). One is up for renewal but they want $37.99 for two years plus $19.99 for privacy.

I want to move to another registrar. How do I do that (can't remember ) and who do you recommend for security, ease of admin, and the right price?

You'll get as many recommendations for this as you have registrars. I'll be first to start. I recommend Dynadot.

You unlock the domain at the current registrar, request an auth code from your current registrar, go to your new registrar and request a transfer to them. Your current registrar will send you an email asking you to confirm the transfer. Once you confirm it, the transfer process will begin between the two registrars. If there is nothing technically wrong with the transfer, you will have the domain at your new registrar in about 5-6 days. Some registrars may have a system in place where you can accept the transfer away immediately and the domain will be released early from the current registrar. But from what you describe of your current registrar, they are probably not one that allows early release.

Thank you. Do you have a referral code or should I just go there? I thought I'd have ten referrals sitting here. I'm going to try to get an auth code from my registrar but will wait for your response before going forward.

You just go there and sign-up. I don't do referral codes on services I recommend. Check out their pricing to see it it meets your requirements before signing up. It's ok to get your auth code before you sign up with another registrar. Remember to also unlock your domain. When you do a whois lookup for your domain, your lock status should be, OK.

Just note that Dynadot privacy doesn't privacy ALL the fields if that's what you need. I think they leave your name showing.

Dynadot is a good registrar and their support has been good for me. You didn't get much additional feedback because the question was answered well enough by Stub

Other registrars would be fine as long as you avoid web.com/register.com/netsolutions etc.

You can edit the name showing on your privacy. So it could also be blank afaik. I actually use it to refer people to my domains sales website. But it could say the registrant was only c/o Dynadot Privacy.

Is there a way to set it up so it immediately transfers over with privacy? Domaintools keeps every little sliver of data so that your privacy is essentially lost because it tracks all the changes (I think).

I only ever privacy one name and people found out *sigh*

As I understand how it works, if you don't turn off the privacy it is still enabled after the transfer. Well at least that how it looked on the few domains I've pushed there. So now I always turn off the privacy before I push the domain (unless I forget, of course). What I don't know is when I turn off the privacy, whether the privacy is still there after the transfer, and all the new owner needs to do, is to turn it back on.
