Transfer of expiring domains

I have a few names that I would like to sell last minute and was just wondering if there are any restrictions on the transfer of expiring domains, for example - can I transfer any domain that is due to expire in a month or in a few days without renewing it first? The extensions I'm interested in are com/net/org/biz/info/mobi/me/tv.

I know this may be a stupid question for many members here but I just want to avoid a situation where I commit to a transaction and then it turns out I have to renew the domain before I can actually initiate a transfer..

Thanks

I think it is much better to transfer before the domain expire. This is important to know because most people transfer a domain name when it's about to expire or just after it expired. This isn't good because most registrars will deactivate a domain name shortly after expiration which will automatically block transfer requests.

Thanks for your input.. but it doesn't really answer my question..

I'm talking about a situation where (hypothetically) I want to transfer a domain I don't really need or want to someone else (a buyer or just someone who actually wants the domain that would otherwise expire and could be caught or registered by someone else) when it is about to expire, lets say in 5 days. Of course, the gaining party is fully aware that the domain is about to expire very soon and it is their responsibility to renew it after the transfer.

It would help to know what Registrar your domains are at.

You may need atleast 5 days to transfer a name out of the registrar. But you can always push the name to a buyer account at the same registrar (as far as I know).
So if the name is expiring within a week, it is better to inform the seller and let him have an account at the same registrar. Or you can renew the name and let him transfer it.

At GoDaddy you can even transfer out expired domains. It's actually against ICANN policy to disallow the transfer of expired domains. But of course it's always better to transfer out before they expire, just in case you encounter any complications.

Yes. I have transferred out expired domains from Godaddy and a few other registrars.

However, some registrars refuse inbound domains with less than a certain number of days before expiry.

Different registrars handle both outbound/inbound transfers differently.

While the buyer should do their research and look up the whois/expiry, etc, it would be a good idea for you to let them know to avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings.

Some buyers who don't want to use Godaddy, may not want the domain pushed to them as it would lock it there for 60 days.

This is exactly what I would have said after learning your Registrar is GoDaddy.

Just be sure to unlock your domain(s) before initiating any transfer.

Also remember to remove whois privacy at Godaddy's domainsbyproxy site - otherwise you won't be able to transfer out even if unlocked.

I somewhat need a refresher on this one. Namely: a) won't doing that kick in their (absurd?) 60-day lock, and b) can one simply ask Go Daddy to disregard that and let the transfer through?

No, I have never been prevented from moving out of Godaddy after removing privacy.

I recall reading someone else on the forum had an issue because his contact information at domainsbyproxy was several years old and no longer valid and he changed it after removing privacy.

@Dave Zan

a) I would have answered yes to this. Because the registrant has changed. But according to RazorNF, they've fixed that problem.

b) You know I've always stated that you can request the 60 day block on Registrant change to be lifted and they will. If you get told by anybody that it cannot be lifted they are incompetent, and you should ask for the issue to raised at a higher level.
