Hi
So I'm targeting a 2-letter .net but I notice a Company owns and operates the equivalent 2-letter .com. How do I know if the name is trademarked and whether I'll have problems with the .net??

Thanks

Research the name then the company....

It's ok if they have it trademarked, if they do, just make sure you avoid being in the same industry as them or offering similar services that would dilute their brand to the public

Trademarks are a messy business, you might gain 'protection' by registration in one jurisdiction, only to be challenged by a trademark holder in another jurisdiction. It is unlikely a two character name is trademarked unless its someone like G.E. You can gain some assurance by doing a search with trademark lawyers but that's awfully expensive. You might try one of the on-line forums like web-law @ yahoo.
good luck!

Check out www. uspto.gov and go to the trademark section and hit the Search link and follow the directions to see if it's trademarked.

I went to uspto.gov, typed in the two letters and it came up with a whole bunch of trademarks. Mostly 'word mark's or logos. Not sure exactly whether this is OK or not.

I think I'll just have to take a gamble.

Instead of taking a gamble, I would suggest you to make sure if the name is actually Trademarked or not. Just taking a gamble and going ahead with the registration may cause future trouble for you.
