I just read a good article that compared the top 100 domain sales by price from 2015 and 2016. John Colascione over at stategicrevenue.com compiled the list. Here's a picture of the list. I think it's interesting.

wow 4L's for 80k!

And I didn't even know about the vivo sale. 2.1 mill, that's a great sale.

to get a better average i think they should have removed the top 2 and bottom 2 sales - by doing so you take out "one offs" and get a better feel for the price movement.

after doing so you get a difference of -$2.2mil (10.68% drop in prices)

its still a drop, but not as dramatic

All the while, the average domainer has probably been lucky to pay for renewals in the last two years.

yet the expired/drop auction prices seem to always increase

Quite a few two word domains for high prices.

i wonder if the 2L were bought as a speculative investment?

Well silentptnr, thanks. I seem to get amused and entertained with all your threads. Nice one. I like looking at these high end sales to see what websites are deserving of the names what they are being used for.

cashforhouses dot com? That much $$$? I went to look who owned it thinking it was BlackRock, and see that it isn't, but then the name redirects to 1800cashforhouse but even that does not resolve. I guess they ran out of money. PersianRugs, that site resolves but could use some better graphics work. They actually have a rug selling for $128,000. I wonder if it fly's too?
Mamma dot com has hemp oil coupons. Bsh and gang dot com are in china for resale. Nerdy and stroke, they too are investments I suppose not resolving.
Retard dot com resolves to Facebook, not surprising. lol.
Snax dot com, resolves to parking at GD. Erotica is porn of course.
JacksonHoleRealEstate redirects to Teton Realty affiliated with Sotheby's
Rapunzel is a hair extension place in sweden, nice name and great idea. Best of bunch so far.
Filament is immediately confusing as to what they have to sell.
CarGames isn't finished but still coming soon, must have overspent on the name and no money for a website.
NeverFail is a server company.
Amber sells amber.
Generosity is redistributing wealth.
Waders is selling rubber fishing boots.
Recette appears to be recipes in french, pink and baby blue.
Broker is sitting parked, waiting for the phone to ring.
Shrooms the owner is being kept in the dark and being fed ----,
Anker sells usb do-dad's
Plethora has a cool animation, nice site and they actually make stuff, great to see that.
TotalCare must have had the caregiver quit, nothing there.
Feat is password protected, hmmm. WTF why would somebody buy that?
HomeSquare is mail order patio furniture.
Essential is the last one I am looking at, what a cool website.

My conclusion is that there are some pretty unimpressive websites under all that cash.
