i am in shock :(

Hi there,

Last evening i watched "Expedition Alaska" on Dicovery Channel and i have to admit, i had a hard time sleeping...

I knew all along that the global warming is an ongoing issue for years, but after watching the show last night i have a feeling that it is already too late to fix what we have done :'(

One of the most impacting scenes for me was seeing the polar bears beeing on land(they are not supposed to, but the Sea Ice where they normally stay is already gone, having polar bears and grizzly bears mixing there species because of that)....and the outlook that polar bears are predicted to be gone by 2050 because of the climate change(i believe that will happen earlier)....or the alaskan tundra melting and releasing methan in counts of billion gallons a day...., turbo fast melting glaciers....and so on :(

And to be honest, all the shifting from the companies to "green" is alot of times just advertising(e.g, in one of the commercial breaks there was a chevy commercial about the Hybrid SUV, but in the fine print at the bottom it was saying "avg 21 MPG", that's a joke!)

Very, very disturbing....

Frank

So you watched something on TV that's for entertainment and commercial gain and you believe it?

I start to wonder if you know the difference between a documentation with facts or a movie like "the day after tomorrow"?

"whether it be apathy, ignorance, greed, or denial, shame, or some combination therein" ..... like Jeff said...........

Cheers,

Frank

P.S: Just watch it, if you don't want to support the greedy Discovery Channel i am more than happy to get a copy of the DVD for you.....

Unfortunately Frank, while your concern is earnest, you and everyone else who is concerned, are fighting a losing battle.

We as a race have been raping the resources of this planet ever since we were spawned into it. We as a race seem to work under the the assumption that all this amazing planet has to offer is infinite. It only follows that the majority of the population see the idea of anything otherwise as a puzzlement, and an annoyance when someone voices otherwise.

The *FACT* that the polar caps have been melting for some time now is no matter for concern, or that sea levels are set to rise some twenty feet within the next 100 years is not a problem to the masses in general, as long as they can go on driving their fuel guzzeling cars and releasing toxins into the air by various methods.

The worlds climate is going to hell in a handbasket but most people are either too apathetic, or have their heads too far up their own asses, to see what is right in front of them. Better to call global warming a myth and feel safe.

These are the sort of people, when the shit really hits the fan, will go "why didn't we do something"?

Unfortunately, they are in the majority.

I'm not perfect, but I try. I know I could probably do more on a personal level. I feel that whilst I can see it coming, my children and their children will be the ones to suffer.

Some days I feel a deep shame for what have done and are doing to this planet. It's sad. I mean, you wouldn't release that sort crap into the air in your own house, but as a race, we readily release it into the atmosphere.

I'm probably ranting now, so I'll stop.

Love your world. It's the only one we've got.

:)

Okay here are some ways that we could be saved.

2) There is not much petroleum left anyway. So all the humans can do is use it till some more years to come. After that they will stop the exhaustion of green house gases. But yes still the trees will be purifying the air at their normal rate and in some more years it will all become normal.

We have predicted amounts of at least 100 years worth of petroleum. At the rates that we are using it (which go higher and higher) this century will be by far the one with most pollution.

The most realistic way to solve this is through good leadership. We must have a president (and other countries) who will invest billions and billions in alternative energy sources. Believe me, the only reason we are having such a hard time getting alternative energy sources to work is because of the oil companies and lobbyests. Its all about the $$. Eventually we will get there, but we need the kind of leader who will be willing to invest extroadinary amounts in alternative energy; after all, we have the technology. It is the oil companies which prevent us. U.S. is the #1 pollutent in the world. U.S. is the country who should lead us out of this crisis.

Lol no this much huge eruption is not needed. that would bring it down to 15 degrees but I am saying it can be a smaller one which can bring it down to 2 degrees :o Who knows it can happen right in between of pacific ocean on some lonely island. Just little one to balance it out.

For petroleum I think yes Bio Fuel is good alternative as of now because it produces less greenhouse gases.

FACT: According to the University of Minnesota in 2006 (1), the production and use of soybean biodiesel decreases life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 41% over regular diesel (NREL says 78%, page 4), and also decreases other pollutants like Carbon monoxide, PM10, and SOx. In fact, pure biodiesel reduces air toxics by 90% when compared to diesel fuel.

Global warming is undeniable and it's effects are showing through many changes on our planet.
Today, MSN.com published extensive reports about our situation, one report outlines the top 10 US cities that are in danger of increasing water levels of the oceans.
Here's the link of water level forecasts: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20958379/wid/18298287/

Florida - Keys and most of the Southern tip of the mainland - Gone
NYC/Manhattan - Donald Trump will have to think about waterworld - Gone
New Orleans - Gone

if you zoom in, you can see the scope of potential damages.

Scary thought, millions of people affected, billions of dollars wasted...

Throughout history, mankind has proven that we're only REALLY good at one thing: Destruction.
Holy Wars, Nuclear Bombs, More advanced weaponry, Unreasonable mid east wars on the pro active side and the slow death through overburdening our planet, stripping it of resources, rain forests, land....you name it, we step up and make damn well sure that we find a way to decimate, cultivate and destroy.
MSN posted a map with the top 10 cities in the US that are in danger by high water levels. Maybe not imminent danger, but since GW is a reality, polar caps are melting and water levels are rising. Check this out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20958379/wid/18298287/

In 2050 we'll be at 9 Billion people? Great! Just what we need!
(I'll merge my other post into this thread)

The actual site is a bit boring compared to the Popular Mechanics article : http://www.theaircar.com/acf/air-cars/air-cars.html But I seen a special on one of the History/Edu type channels that was cool. It's a car powered by compressed air Good for about 125 miles each refill.

We should be welcoming Global Warming...if it's as full of doom as liberals predict it should take care of population control for us. In the 70's they were worried about Global Cooling. In the 80's it was Nuclear Disaster. Heck in the 50's it was Alien Invasion.

Anyone remember this movie?

Orson wells narrates "The Late Great Planet Earth".

http://youtube.com/results?search_query=The+Late+Great+Planet+Earth

Prophesy about the doom of our planet and species has been around since we could first talk. The bible itself contains one of the most horrific and first tellings of the end. The "science" that we rely on today will most likely be the fodder for future generations comedy. Global Warming -hahaha!!!

Look, I wonder if you are under 20 or what.

Because only that could explain your careless attitude towards REAL problems.

I don`t give a damn about your local politics, while you bring in liberals and democratics in everything.

Watch Al Gore`s documentary you`ll see how real is.

I have relatives that have been in Central Africa where the lake that Gore shows in the documentary now is totally disappeared. My relatives have been there in the year 1960 and they told me that it was so huge that they believed it was the Ocean.

I have to agree - Just because Gore or any politician is involved in something doesn't mean it's a sham .... As much as I hate Politicians for the most part. It's the only way to gain attention by the masses though , By using a well known spokesperson.

The last time I got into a Heated Discussion over this , People were arguing that it's just part of the natural cycles of our planet. Well I agree from stuff I've seen and read there is a cycle to alot of this. Ice core samples and layers of rock etc .. prove that much. BUT - According to many of those SAME scientists , We're supposed to be in a COOLING cycle now.

Well Guess what ?

Sorry Jesse/labrocca, IMO that was the most ignorant/selfish post i have ever seen on a forum....even i am sometimes amused/inspired of your controversy posts to a lot of threads here, this time i think you just responded because you wanted to fuel fire, get attention...guess what ,even i respond - it ain't work.... a lot of people who see your response think"WTF"?

You didn't respond at all to my answer or italiand ragons answer...and that shows me that you just have a problem with politics, ...guess what...you are not alone!!!

It might work in the domain world but this time your rant was just inappropriate....wake up

Peace,

My guess is he wanted to be in the press and have his 15 minutes of fame.. :)

Sheesh, people! get off his electric bill already!

It's his speaking, presentation skills, recognizable persona, and his world wide connections that help the entire cause. I couldn't care less how much he's using in his own house. The national average is what's referred to - i hardly believe that Gore's house is the size of the national average home.
The last thing he needed to do is go on the road to promote a cause that's of importance to mankind. He's got enough money to lean back, twiddle his thumbs, go fishing or play chess with the village chester. However, he chooses to go on the road, weeks at a time, while his family is waiting at home. If you EVER traveled for a living, you'll know what strain that imposes on yourself and your family. If you haven't, i think it's time to shut that trap, because you obviously have no idea what you're talking about and resort to criticism of the person Gore rather than the effects of GW.
Before spitting out links that are nothing but counterproductive, how about some house cleaning on your own stoop?!
When was the last time that any of you nay-sayers have contributed to stopping the effects of GW? Oh, sorry i forgot; the entire issue doesn't exist. :|

I know that Gore has a big house, so what?

Do we want to compare a big house with all the mess Bush has done?

Oil, Uranium, thousands and thousands of young americans killed in this stupid war.....please do not let me start.

Scientist slams spread of climate change 'misinformation'

Posted Thu Apr 24, 2008 11:00pm AEST

A leading climate change scientist says there is too much misinformation being spread about the theory.

Professor Barry Brook from the University of Adelaide says those who deny climate change often have ulterior motives.

He has published an article calling for scientists to step up and support the research being done in the field.

Professor Brook says it can take just a few minutes for popular opinion to undermine years of scientific research.

"Anyone can get up there on a website or on a blog, or even get an opinion piece published in a newspaper that just says a bunch of crackpot ideas that haven't been through any rigorous scrutiny," he said.

People in public life (politicians, actors, etc.) have to accept criticism, as it comes with the territory. If a person really meant to do something about GW other than just be an actor, they would lead by example. The link shows the hypocracy of a person who wins a Nobel prize for a documentary, but leaves a large carbon footprint at the same time.

When was the last time that any of you nay-sayers have contributed to stopping the effects of GW? Oh, sorry i forgot; the entire issue doesn't exist.

For your information, I built my home 15 years ago with a geothermal heating and cooling system, all windows are low-e glass with argon filled double and triple pane, and I built the home with 6" exterior walls for extra insulation which is beyond the required code. I've also in the past couple years changed most household bulbs to compact fluorescent or LED for energy savings, and have even investigated the possibility of a wind turbine to power my home, but there isn't enough wind where I live to justify it.

I also avoid buying or selling Chinese made products whenever I can because they are probably the fastest growing contributor to GW and pollution. the Chinese factories aren't as environmentally regulated, and we burn a lot of energy shipping raw materials over their and then the final goods back again.

I've also been contributing annually for at least 15 years to the Nature Conservancy because they buy land to prevent development. Land with plants that produce oxygen and absorb CO2.

What have you done? By the way, I didn't say the problem didn't exist, either.
