I have been very busy lately working on my projects, some .tv and some not so .tv (www.FreeNameExchange.com). Many of us are patiently waiting for eNom to release the last few remaining .tv premium names and tools that will be provided to what I hope will be all .tv users. The most difficult part of any .tv acquisition is deciding how you will develop and monetize it if you are not a developer.

I know that I cannot possibly develop all of my .tv names (a fraction of them can be seen here), so does that mean I have to be a speculator too? After a lot of thought and discussion with others, I am beginning to realize that I would rather not sell one of my .tv names just to make a profit (unless it was for some ridiculous amount I could not pass up). Instead, I feel as though I have become a collector of domain names like I used to baseball card collector with the only difference being that I can build a business on a domain name which I could not do with baseball cards.

Some people smoke, some people drink, some people collect stamps, some people collect random junk, and others collect domain names. Even when I receive lucrative offers for a good name in my portfolio, I feel like like I would be selling something that I love if I were to accept. Maybe its separation anxiety...I don't know, but all I can say is that I love it and look forward to building each one of them some day, some time in the future.

Is it ridiculous to think that I could develop even a fraction of them? Possibly, but it only takes one hit to fund the development of the rest over my lifetime. Am I foolish for wanting to make that a goal? What do you think?

I share that domainer approach. Other than a few domains wharehoused at 1plus.com none of my domains are listed for sale, or are ppc / parking page domains. I buy with the intent to develop and dream of spending the rest of my life doing just that. A friend told me he could see me working on this from my death bed. I told him... what a way to go!

Let your grandkids develop them. You will be the smartest grandpa in history!

I have plenty years left on this earth but I see no reason why I wouldn't be leaving my domains to my kids in my will.

Indeed! I have already discussed this with them. Not that I plan on going anywhere soon. And, the best part, they think that is "soooo coool"!

I feel the same way! I feel like they are sportscards! Thats exactly why I do sell them! I became so attached to my card collection tat I now have about 5k cards book valued at over 50K, but now with places like ebay their values have plummeted and reselling them would be pointless, I would end up with 2k. I made $0 dollars selling my sportscards and now they only have centimental value. I do not intend on letting that happen with domains. I refuse to let this turn into an obsession. I prefer to turn a profit and supplement my photography career. Come december I will have about $2500 of .tv renewal fees to contend with and I dont intend on paying it because most names should be sold by then! I just liquidated my .mobi portfolio for $1300, I doubled my money and have no renewals! Sweet! I do believe .tv is developers dream. There are many affordable options that could be used as a mainstream site. Thats why I will be developing at least one .tv as soon as I get my secrow form the .mobis! I hope everyone isnt getting caught up in the pleasure of registrations and posting, dont forget to make sales folks!

I second that! Can I get an Amen!?!

On a side note, you have some tasty .TV's, domainacrobat. When you get around to developing Hiker.TV keep me in mind as I have HikerHouse.com and live in one of the best hiking areas in the country... with 500 miles of mountain wilderness trails... and have already had about 20 hikers stay at my new Hiker House, just from word of mouth -on the trail. BTW, the Pacific Crest Trail, where folks hike from the Mexican border to Canada starts in late April... and comes thru my town in early May. Check out the vid at IdyllwildTV.com

So if you you haven't sold any of them are you making a profit? Think about here and now, in the future we are all dead.

Many good points in here.
1, don't let it turn into an obsession
2, if you have a chance for profit - sell
3, if you can - develop and keep the best of your domains (unless #2 comes in)
4, avoid renewal fees unless the domain pays for itself (parking, etc)
5, don't sit here and shoot 4 points into a list when you're not doing any of the above.... oh yeah, that would be me.... :|

i think i'll have to start selling before too long. i'm not going to renew all my junk this year, time to tune it down to a handful....
