Acquiring extensions

I have a question about companies and domain extensions.
Do companies or organizations usually acquire or try to acquire their main domain extensions?

I think it depends on the company. I would venture to say that most companies don't worry about any other extension other than .com. So register or acquire the .net, but after that they stop.
