Today I tried to renew my 3 chars domain abc.info with Wildwestdomain reseller.
I have got an error message :
--------------------------------------------
The renewal of abc.INFO has FAILED.

Error: pendrenew: Object is not eligible for renewal2105:Object is not eligible for renewal (abc.info)

Please contact Global.biz for assistance.
--------------------------------------------

So I wrote an email asking the support and here is his answer.

Thank you for contacting customer support.

Three-character domains are no longer eligible for renewal, as these domains are being retained by the registry. This situation is not unique to us, and affects all domain registrars. We apologize for any inconvenience.

No it will be expired in about 2 months.

I think someone is trying to pull your willy on this. :tri:

To avoid further trouble and especially if you intend to keep the domain, go ahead and transfer it away for your own sake. Just to avoid trouble with them going on and claiming it can't be renewed.

lol

Yeah I suggest that the best way is to transfer it to another registar, especially you got 2 months left, which is more than enough for a transfer process. Good luck!

Just curious. Was the name obtained through a backorder?
Reason I ask, is that backordering has introduced me to a whole new class of registrar. Many, (not all), of the he little registrars that are partnered w/ the drop services, (ie Pool, SnapNames, Wildwest), are acting, as pimpdaddy put it, funky.

I went a bit B/O crazy w/ 3char and 3LL domains last May and have run into a slew of problems in trying to manage the names, (ie DNS and transfers). I started the transfer process of about 30 of these names about a month ago, and am still having probs- from failed transfers to non operating sites and no contacts, w/ about half of these "registrar partners". My new policy, whenever I win a B/O through one of these cos., is to trnasfer ASAP, usually 60 das, while the iron is hot.

I'm glad that you, (and I), started early enough, and didn't get into a last minute trap by waiting to make a move too close to the expiry date.

PS I am resorting to sending emails, to both registrar and drop service, w/ an attachment of a complaint email that I have prepared, and am ready to send on a specified date, to ICANN et al, , per a suggestion by an NP member.

Someone is trying to con someone here - just not sure who it is. For starters, ABC.info is not coming up for renewal. It is registered to August 2006 and not at WildWest. If you were just using ABC as an example when you meant another domain (which would have been very helpful to know) and the above communications were real I would suspect the WildWest reseller (who is someone in Bangkok) of trying to pull a fast one. I renew 3-letter .infos practically everyday - they are definetly not registry reserved and if the registry ever did decide to do that they would only be able to apply it to dropping domains (as the .org registry did with 2-letter domains, taking them out of circulation if they were not renewed).

I had assumed that "abc" was being used as a ficticious "example".
Could you clarify, paulc?

Yes, that's correct.
I'm in the process of transferring it away.
Thank you for all you great people.

paulc, to help avoid confusion, "example" ie example.com or [example].com is the preferred way of listing an alias or cloak for a domain:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2606.txt
Some highlights:
TLDs for Testing, & Documentation Examples

There is a need for top level domain (TLD) names that can be used for
creating names which, without fear of conflicts with current or
future actual TLD names in the global DNS, can be used for private
testing of existing DNS related code, examples in documentation, DNS
related experimentation, invalid DNS names, or other similar uses.

.test
.example
.invalid
.localhost
".example" is recommended for use in documentation or as examples

example.com/.net/.org all resolve to the above link. example.info doesn't resolve at all.

Hope that helps. B-)
