.tv Those Interesting 2-letter .tv names

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
With all the fuss at the moment about Verisign deciding to hold back at the registry any 2-letter names that ever drop, I figured it might be worthwhile seeing if there was any interesting stuff to share about 2-letter .tv names...

There are only a maximum possible number of 676 two-letter .tv names available.
(thats 26 x 26 = 676)

Of the 676 two-letter .tv names that it is possible to have, over half (340 to be exact) are officially designated as .TV RESERVED NAMES
This means they are NOT available to buy but may be used for a large promotion/auction in the future.

Of the 336 available two-letter .tv names that are owned by individuals and companies a whopping 143 are still designated as old-style premiums.
These names were all acquired prior to March 2010 and have a bespoke YEARLY renewal (set when they were purchased) of anything from $10 to $10,000.
Yes, that’s $10,000 every year - and still paid by at least four organisations - although the average amount is $1000

Of the 676 two-letter .tv names that are not .TV Reserved Names or old style premiums we are left with just 193 names where a STANDARD renewal fee is paid every year. This standard renewal averages $26 a year but can be as low as $22 at DomainMonster or as high as $39 at GoDaddy (without coupon).

Of the 193 STANDARD renewal two-letter .tv names that are available on the planet some 83 have been ‘nabbed’ for those who took out backorders via Name.com or Hexonet.net
These names are classed as ‘new premiums’ and have a one-off variable registration fee (from as low as $102 to as high as $10900). These names were ALL registered from MARCH 2010 onwards and once the initial fee was paid they are classed as Standard renewals (roughly $26 a year). The one thing all these ‘new premiums’ have in common is that they cannot be moved from the registrar from which they were purchased.

And this leaves just 109 two-letter .tv names that are totally free in every sense. These were mostly acquired in two special auctions held at Sedo and Snapnames, they can be moved to any registrar, and they have a standard renewal ($26).

To put this into context, the 193 ‘normal-ish’ two-letter .tv names out there (those that you can renew for less than $50 a year) if shared by everyone on the planet (all 7,143,000,000 of us) would be equivalent to ...

37 million people for every single standard renewal two-letter .tv name!

OR Exactly one standard renewal two-letter .tv name for every independent country on the planet.

WIth regard to ownership, the big guns are China’s Mai Lifang, Canada’s Ben Van Dyk, Holland’s John Van Den Berg, the USA’s Ammar, and Russia’s Philip Gross.

As for whether the value will go up or down because less than half of those that could be in the market are held back by the registry. Does it really matter?
There is only one US.tv or UK.tv- and whether or not HD.tv can or can't be bought should never affect that fact. No more than RU.tv selling for over $60k doesn't affect the value of UR.tv

EDIT - EXTRA INFO
I should also have mentioned that there are 39 old-style premiums that are quite exclusive in the fact they have a really low annual premium renewal. These were acquired in the early days of .tv and have fixed renewals of anything from $10 to $50 a year. Obviously, anyone with a fixed renewal of $10 a year won't care to much about any inflationary pressure / increased prices by the registrars.
These 39 'golden premiums' are:

Pretty rocking post. Appreciate the research. With all the noise of other vanity extensions coming, this continues to demonstrate the value of .tv. Will be interesting to see what Verisign does with their reserved inventory. On a side note, I would add you to that list of large holders as you have demonstrated a way to create a reseller market after initial acquisition.

Thanks for sharing. For now I am avoiding the new TLDs but continue to hold .TV (a few drops and a few random acquisitions). .TV has been around for more than a decade and yet still does not have mass appeal in the US. But the extension makes sense for a video-oriented site if the keyword is one where you could realistically create videos around that topic. Friday I suppose I wasn't the only one who received the message about an unknown investor putting $50k into aftermarket .TV domains. Hopefully we will hear some more details in the next couple weeks or so.

I have never pursued LL.tv as the pricing tends to be beyond my reach. Congrats to those who have acquired a few.

Wow, an unknown investor pumping $50k into dot tv last week huh...
And a message specifically to you telling you of this also?
Sweet!

I guess I am not in the loop anymore because I didn't get a message from anyone, and I have recently spoken with a couple of the big dogs...lol

If you can elaborate on your message at all I am sure that would be almost as interesting as James' Opening Post! :)

Not sure if the investor is unknown or people aren't tracking carefully. I believe I know who this investor is based purely off public and non public sales based on WHOIS. I think 50K may be accurate. Could be more.

All in all, the most shocking thing for me is all this conversation about folks purchasing short dot whatevers and are they are willing to take the risk on paying a premium renewal. What about all the complaints with .tv? They believe they have a better chance of gaining profit on something not established. What a joke.

I totally agree with Ammudamos regarding all the criticism thrown at .TV over the years and yet even experienced domainers viewing the new TLDs as the second coming of .COM. Yes, ten years from now 2014 may have turned out to have been a good entry point but given the long-term existence of .Net and .TV and .Info which still seem to make sense for certain keywords, I don't understand the exuberance and willingness to gamble on a totally unproven extension. At least with .TV I see some usage in television programming and there are reported sales on DNJ.

---------- Post added at 10:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:41 PM ----------

Regarding the investor, I won't know who they are unless they end up buying one of the domains I submitted through their broker and the buyer doesn't select privacy registration. I haven't received any response yet so perhaps they didn't like my prices :) I only submitted among my best one-word English videocentric keyword .TV domains so I would think there shouldn't be an issue with the list. Perhaps the broker should have made an announcement on this subforum?

Great post James, really makes 2 letter .tv more valuable. I own about 40 of them, non premium, $26 standard renewal. Verisign took back HD.tv from me, GM.tv, which pissed me off, but increases value of what I and others own already.

The position is that we had the Name.com backorder and there is a 95% chance that they would have grabbed it.

On technicality you are right.

Kind Regards,
A

How can they take something from you when the domain never really dropped?

Ahh ok. I wonder if they'll reserve more dropping domains in the future. Doesn't really make sense to reserve 1L/2L domains when some of the new gTLD's allow 1L domains to be registered.

These 39 'golden premiums' are:
ab.tv ai.tv at.tv av.tv cc.tv dc.tv dj.tv do.tv en.tv eo.tv ew.tv fn.tv fx.tv ge.tv go.tv hq.tv ja.tv jd.tv md.tv mi.tv ms.tv nj.tv nt.tv nv.tv ob.tv ok.tv op.tv pa.tv qc.tv rx.tv so.tv st.tv sv.tv vr.tv vw.tv wa.tv we.tv wi.tv xf.tv

It would be great to do not quote the first post...
Thanks for the info. Great post!

I should add that the OLD-STYLE PREMIUM NAMES have now gone down to 142 - and it looks like it will be 141 from tomorrow

while the

RESERVED NAMES has risen to 341 but 342 tomorrow.

Now, if all 342 were put in a well-publicised auction that would garner a massive interest from around the world - and help Verisign work on their profits!

Great post James!

Would you happen to know how many, non-premium, 2-letter, English, dictionary words exist, which are not reserved?

Thank you,

Claude

Apparently KJ.tv dropped and was taken back by the registry.

Yeah, it shows .TV Reserved Domains in the Whois Info.

NT.tv was taken too.

SO.tv dropped and never came back - it is now a reserved name and away from use by the public.
Hopefully Verisign know what they are doing!

Interesting that it should be SO.tv that defines this moment - the end of an era where it was possible to actually pick-up a two-letter .tv name at registration.

As to affect on value …

The Old-Style Legacy premium names (the ones that cost a lot to renew each year) will continue drip-dropping and never be seen again until verisign decide to have a bIG auction of some kind. Could be tomorrow, could be next year, could be never.

The rest of the two-letter names, those which have standard renewals - have already started to increase in value - simply because those that own them all understood what is happening to the demand/supply chain and upped their prices accordingly.
(the ones that are selling or inclined to sell that is)

To all those who own a standard renewal two-letter name. Well done. It looks like you got a 'keeper'.

Partially ignoring my own comment in the first post about value, if you do own a two-letter name don't forget to put a lot of thought into any decision about selling for a quick buck! We all know of documented cases of two-letter .tv's having already sold for over $60k so perhaps a more cautious approach to selling might be advised.

Did the registry realize that a handful of people (domainers) had all the backorders and decide to squash it? Seems like a reasonable assumption...

That would be fair, wonderful and Stasi-like all at the same time if true.

I think this move has everything to do with the even more reasonable assumption that Verisign simply figured all two-letter .tv names would sell easily and it might be better to bunch a few up and then have a big promo/auction/sale at a later date. This would also have the added beauty of bringing in a better price.

The emphasis on their thought processes would be 'bringing in a better price'.

Domain investors should not forget that even though the registries do sell many domains to domain investors, their motive is not necessarily to help the investor make a giant profit. Quite often they sell a domain which will never find an end user. Who knows how many one-word domains in major extensions are held by investors vs. end users.
