Hi all, The following domain gets 213,970 Unique Visitors per month at sedo but Overture says 0 for all the possible variations of the domain, nothing in archive which makes me think someone has paid for traffic to point to it perhaps in order to get a high click rate ?

Any other possiblities to this ??? and if this is what is happening is it common ?

Domain Popularity: XXXXXXXXXXX(dot)com www removed as it went to a porn site  oops !

PageRank: Unranked
Alexa Rank: Unranked

Link Popularity:
Incoming Google Links: 0
Incoming Yahoo Links: 0
Incoming MSN Links: 0
Incoming Alexa Links: 0
DMOZ Listed: No
Archive.org Listed: No

I have'nt posted the name as it's obviously not getting this in type in traffic or overture would of shown something. ( don't want to spoil their sales technic/chances as it has had 3 offers) :)

lol gazzip, you should edit that. It's pointing to a porn site. :P

But over 213k visitors to a domain with no backlinks? That doesn't seem possible...

I really am clueless. At first I thought it might be the actual owner checking back to see how many hits he'd been getting or something, but it's uniques...hmm, very weird!

The only thing I can think of is redirecting (paid) traffic to it to get high paying click throughs ? ( and to make it look far better than it is !)

might be some kind of error in sedo's script . but that amount of users can be achieved without backlinks only if u market the site offline and with word of mouth else it is impossible

I just got a sedo newsletter that explains what is propbably going on with this domain, interesting :)

The ?pump and dump? scam involves a fraudulent seller picking up an inexpensive domain and then proceeding to artificially inflate the traffic the domain receives by manufacturing it, either through link exchanges, promotional software, a pop up generating virus or other means. Once the domain has enough traffic to make it look tempting, that person then places it on the open market and sells it to the first bidder, usually for a price that makes it look like a real ?steal?. However, don?t let the lure of easy money fool you. A little research goes a long way into filtering out these bad apples and their worthless domains.

Before buying a domain for its traffic, you?ll want to know if it?s legitimate. The origin of the traffic, whether the domain is listed in popular directories, how often people search for the domain, and whether it was previously developed are all good things to reference before submitting an offer for a domain. Luckily, Sedo has made this research as easy as clicking on a link, specifically one you?ll now find on every offer page entitled ?Analyze the domain: domain.com?.

The other thing I have know people to do is just redirect most of the domains they own to a single one ... They can then concentrate on selling that as it is receiving a lot of traffic.
Of course as soon as it is sold they forward their domains to the next one on their list to sell and the new owner ends up with a sudden drop in traffic.

Something else that happened to me a while back was a got a dropped domain and parked it on Sedo, was quite surprised to see it getting 25 - 35K hits a month so did a bit more investigating. It turned out that the previous owner had used it to hold some of their Avatars and they posted on quite a few forums .... Each time someone viewed one of the threads the forum would try and load the Avatar from the domain and Sedo would register it as a hit.

All the best

Richard

Hmmmm. Today I tried to check Alexa ranking for one of my sites in .kiev.ua. I was shocked to see that it has 300k uniqes while in reality I have 10. After investigation I realized that Alexa counts ALL .kiev.ua domains. Alexa doesnt' understand that that is a zone not a domain with subdomains. Silly.
