Somebody help me figure this out. Every time a massacre like this occurs, I have the same problem: Why is it that I care more about violence that happens close to me and less about violence that happens across the world? Why does my proximity to the violent event seem to dictate how much I care?
Why do I care more about extreme violence that happens a few miles away from me, like the Aurora theatre or Columbine massacres, and basically care significantly less when extreme violence happens far away. The farther away, the less I feel it directly relates to me, the less I care...
And so, it feels like my opinion about violence is near worthless when it changes based upon my proximity to it. How can I have anything legitimate to say if the same type of horrific event happens in say, Uzbekistan, and it means nearly nothing to me?
Is this just me or does anyone else have this issue?
