Actually I think itโs more basic than that:
- People with an unquestioning high regard and deference to authority figures. Establish yourself as an authority and you can sell them anything.
- People who are frustrated with life and feel they are being deprived of something
- People who have had little to no contact or familiarity with some demographic groups
- People who can be emotionally prompted to act from fear. Can be fear of change, fear of loss of status, fear of unfamiliar cultures, economic, ...
Trumps rally rhetoric and outlets like Fox News, conspiracy sites like gateway pundit, stoke these fears with exaggerations and outright lies.. Brown people are storming the border, people are having and then killing viable babies, etc.
Back when Obama was pres remember the โdeath panelsโ thing that some people thought would happen under ACA? I remember my dentists receptionist (a nice older woman) going on about how terrified she was about that. No rational basis in fact, but that story played to emotions and fear so certain people (the target audience) bought it.
Now those same people are buying into trumps lies.
