Clip of Stephen Miller in high school, going on a rant about having to pick up his own trash... Somehow this does not surprise me.
Didn't know who he was until your post. But interesting that his statement as a kid "we have plenty of janitors to pick up the trash for us" is exactly the attitude of those who lean socialist.
I heard those exact words a few times in the UK (the more recent UK). One guy even suggested that if everyone picked up their trash, the street cleaners would be out of work, so the patriotic thing to do was to litter.
Not so different in the states. Parks are maintained by the government, streets are cleaned by the government. It's rare to see a member of the public doing it. It the over-policed US, there are probably even laws against it.
This is the effect that socialism has on a people. They absolve themselves of individual responsibility, and hand it over to the government. When the government finally runs out of the people's money, chaos ensues because everybody expects everything to be done for them.
One reason I like Japan, for all of its faults (and its government is no better), is that there are no janitors in the schools - the kids keep it clean themselves. Of course, the toilets are never vandalized or left a mess...
People sweep the street in front of their houses or shops. There are neighborhood groups who go to clean up the local park on a regular basis. At least when the government runs out of the people's money here, there will already be an element of cooperation to keep the place from falling apart.
Yesterday, in a pancake house in the US, some guy was paying for people's meals and giving others $20 bills. He ended up being shot to death. Some woman felt he wasn't getting her fair share from him. Welcome to the entitlement world...
