.io is very much seen as a tech related domain than a Geo based domain. So there will be very less impact to no impact.

I think the fear is that the extension could be retired as others have after handovers.

The new owners will have the sovereignty over the extension, most probably. E.g. .su did not get retired and is controlled by Russia.

And it will basically be up to the new owners what they want to do with it. E.g. require some kind of presence, reserve previously sold names or claw them back, raise prices to $500/year etc.

This is the type of unnecessary risk any business takes on when they go with one of those pseudo-global tlds like .io, .ai, .ly, .tv, .co etc.

It is highly recommended to keep it, many people use it, it is very valuable, and the cost of applying for a new domain suffix is not small these days.

This is of serious concern to domainers!
Too good I only keep one io, too bad if the extension get's dissolved.

Additionally, it is my own thinking, this is made on purpose, so to force people to move to (.ai) we will see later if I m right.
But such tactic is not excluded to be a manipulation by governments, because they want to replace humans with robots!

Many (most?) of the top .io owners already own the corresponding .com.

There are some exceptions, of course, e.g. itch.io. I doubt itch.zone (theirs) is good enough as a backup plan.
